Assembly 2014

category: parties [glöplog]
I can tell you stories about how even recordings aren't risk free.

Yeah, lots of potential screw ups witing to happen there, too. Plus the thing that for parties smaller than Assembly recording equipment that does proper 1080p60 is pretty much out of their league (then again, demos rarely manage to hit 60fps at 1080p either but when they do it's worth it).

I am curious: Are the recordings Assembly uses in the compos in 1080p? Because they only upload 720p videos on YT.

Pretty disappointed :

Out of seven 1K productions : don't have OSX, all versions of the 5 WIN32 crash my Win32 XPSP3 intel Core2 Duo, the last .js just outs "‰PNG IHDRTz›jawh" on "html5 ready" latest Opera version.

Runnig Dxdiag I have DirectX 9.0c, maybe that explains, but why not use compatible gdi ?

The compos are played back at 720p. Afaik the youtube caps are the exact videos played at the compo.

You are trolling, right? Win32 XP? Please... ;)

Badsaufer: 1k is about using the dirties possible tricks available to get max audio+visuals run in minimum space on the compo machine. The intros usually do not work on many other hw / os / driver configs and they would be horrible if we spent the size to make them compatible instead.

rale and las :
Not trolling just disappointed. I hear what you say but it doesn't reflect my opinion still (We can agree to disagree.) :

1) Sizecoding is about expansion within the constraints, not expanding the contraints themselves : all Win32 run compatible GDI on all systems.
2)Don't replace skills and know-how by money and card expansions tailored by big corporations for gamers ;)

I understand a lot of work went into these productions for sure (congratulations to prodders), hence why I didn't downthumb any of them. Will wait for videos.

I missed prizegiving, did anyone remember first 3 places in 4k and demo?

Regarding the Oldschool compo: If you're unhappy with the rules in the compo, why not contact the organizing? That way the rules might actually get changed.

720p videos are actually an argument against the recordings, since 1080p is standard resolution for demoscene prods today, I would say.

Baudsurfer: we're all looking forward to your 1k intro. I'm sure it will be AMAZING!

...in GDI!

One question - why GDI?

Because SOFTWARE IS HARDCORE, obviously.

Also, running JavaScript 1Ks in Opera might be the ultimate trolling.

Baudsurfer: your intros don't run on my Amiga or any CP/M machine. What gives?

Salinga, it seems the Asm video capture hardware can only do 720p reliably, which is why even if you could do 1080p at 60fps, you will still have to play the 720p version in the recording session. At least we did.

That said, I prefer the recording approach to live. If you do your stuff on an even minisculely more obscure platform that the organizers would happen to readily have, you're in for a world of hurt. For example, the recording equipment display refresh rate was detected incorrectly for our compo machine. We had to connect two monitors simultaneously to be able to set the settings manually for the other. No-one wants to wait/watch stuff like that when the actual compo is running.

I have a Hauppauge PVR2 HD here. It records 1080p nicely. Unfortunatly only 30 fps.

the small clips really added to the compo studio experience for myself - i not only get reminded about what was shown but can actually see it again!

there are risks with recording too, btw; did you not hear the horrible high pitch sounds during the compo? :O

a few notes:
-yeah, the front seating area was increasingly packed, from 1k, to 4k, to demo And all of those people weren't already sceners
-I though the 1k compo was amazing
-I am really tired of too much f*cking base in party sound systems
-apparently the source of the screetch was an HDMI handshake issue, I was told today
-compo studio is fun, I wanna do it again
-we all had to pee
also, if everyone went to sauna there would be fewer wars
