Let the Amiga rest

category: general [glöplog]
Is it time now to lay the Amiga to rest? After a lousy demoscene year the PC scene could use some great talents. Just look at the impact Keops has made since he made the switch from the Atari scene.

What has the Amiga got to offer? Most sceners view Amiga stuff with Winuae anyway. The only difference between PC and Amiga stuff is that Amiga stuff is lower res, slower speed, has less polygons, colours, layers, effects etc etc.

Let the Amiga rest, but let its spirit live for decades to come in the PC scene, just as it has done through the work of the many great former Amiga sceners.

Let 2005 be the year where Amiga sceners take over the scene and beat the PC sceners at their own damn game!
"Let 2005 be the year where Amiga sceners take over the scene and beat the PC sceners at their own damn game!"

They already have....

Only the C64 people could do that! The amiga scene is dead, apart from TBL.

Its like that amiga people already invented the scene, right? That is why you are like upset, right?

this is a fucking stupid idea, shanehtewolf. in my opinion, 2004 wasn't a particulary bad scene year. And nevertheless, having alternative platforms for those who wants more challenge and a different way of making demos is a good thing. I appreaciate the variation and richness

Ok fine, but the Amiga is old and isn't handling new demos very well any more. But if there are people who still like making blocky, jerky monochrome demos for machines most people don't own or have locked away in a cupboard, I'm not going to stand in their way.

I just think it would be nice to see some of the great talent and ideas brought upto date and to see the true potential of these great sceners.

I mean, let's face it, the TBL, Eph, Spaceballs and Loonies 680xx demos are nice, but they'd be 100 times better if they used PC hardware and software.

And don't get me started on the PPC. That's just a completely pointless machine.
Coder's point of view: Optimizing for hardware has its own charm, and it's pretty difficult to do on a modern PC in the way that it gives you total satisfaction. I still remember the times when I optimized innerloops for my Pentium I and loved it..

I kinda agree with Shane... The Amiga scene should have been stopped in 97.

...but saying it out loud is a different matter altogether.

when i use my amiga or C64 it's just for fun, PC is my #1.. but that doesn't mean i'll take my amiga rest! =)

As much as it might still hurt people Shane is right. The amiga scene is so pointless these days. Having such a small "real" audience... I would rather the few talented people left migrate to PC and strut their stuff here..

I can`t see how anyone is motivated in producing something with next to no audience..

.. and like Shane said.. forget PPC..

I don't want to force any Amiga sceners from their homeland either, but it sure would be fun to see what they could come up with.

I would also like to see some more GBA sceners, as flashcarts is getting pretty widespread these days, and I love to see what my little baby can do :)
Well, I think we all should be happy that there are demos for almost every platform! If someone finds something 'useless', since this something is not a 'problem' (on the contrary), then he/she(/it) could simply ignore it... ...or something.
I do admit however that I thought numerous times it would probably be cool to target for a powerfull platform. There is definitelly more freedom to do some magic the demoscene way!... :-)

I agree with Shane, people should only make demos for PCs running Windows XP with AMD processors and nVidia graphic cards. Any other platform/configuration severely limits creative potential. Honest.
another pointless thread. after seeing amiga demos kicking ass compared to pc demos at breakpoint, how we can give them a rest? silkcut and live axxion wouldn't be the same demos if they were done on other platforms and they don't even need to be that. besides, one of the best 4k's from last year (finnmark) was also made on amiga.

if you start platform elitism, one could at once state the demos are useless in general, no matter what platform you're using. but it's not about being useful or useless but more of having fun and doing whatever you feel up to. hey, and huge respect to guys doing something on as crazy platforms as vic-20 (remember robotic warrior?)

what a grey, plain boring world it would be if all the demos were cloned 3d-accelerated microsoft windows compatible flybyes...

Once again a thread from the Pouet troublemaker no. 1!

Simply let the people do what they want. And I *DO WANT* to continue working on and with the Amiga and I don't care how senseless you think it might be.

I still love the productions that are made on Amiga. What are you suggesting... that each and everyone makes demos on the same platform, with the same hardware, ... how fascinating this would be.

And 'the amiga scene should NOT have been stopped in 1997'. If you look at the 'humble' charts at my website, you will see that a lot of productions from after 1997 are actually voted very high. Productions like Big!, Planet Potion, Klone, Gift, Bier, Silkcut, The Castle, Ikanim, Brus, Perfect Circle, Finnmark, Major Release, Live Axxion, Heartcore, nearly all of the Ephidrena productions, the Madwizards demos, ....

I for one am really happy that all these releases have found there way to us after 1997. I try to watch demos on all platforms but it still are the Amiga demos that are closest to my heart. That's not fanatism or anything. It's the way i like my demos to be.

I think that groups like Ephidrena, Nature, Spaceballs, Up Rough, The Black Lotus, Iris ... have their place on the demoscene and i for one am damn glad that they are doing their art on Amiga. What a boring demoscene it would be if everyone does the same thing on the same platform.

@Darkus:
So everything (every artform in general) that has a smaller audience isn't worth doing anymore? Again, the world will turn into a very boring place that way.

@Shane:
off-topic, but are you that dude from which i once had a virus installed on my Amiga?

and add that the scene shouldnt be taking so goddamn seriously :P
oh!oh!oh!oh!
*Zomb points his finger at Maali

Now seriously, I enjoy amiga prods even on crap video conversions. They have a very special mood, besides amiga sceners sure know how to surprise. So let's prosecute Shane with burning sticks to the central town plaza !!

The way I see it, Amiga demomaking is an entirely different skill from PC demomaking.
A demo like Perfect Circle just wouldn't work if it was only higher resolution and 3d-accelerated.
As an Amiga demo it's fantastic, as a PC demo it would be substandard.

The Amiga guys are great at what they do, and they apparently like what they're doing... but that doesn't mean they'd also be great at doing PC demos, and they may not even enjoy doing so. At any rate, it'd take a long time to start all over on PC, and develop new engines and tools, and make them good enough to be competitive. It's just a different kind of game.
