64k synths

category: music [glöplog]
Just wondering what options there are for 64k synths for windows? The only one I know of is the farbrausch V2 synth.

Ferris hasn't published the synth he put to the test in Varia Part 1, has he ?

p01: nope, but I suppose I should by now... :) It's reaper- and ableton-only currently, but if open-sourced it should be quite easy for someone to add support for other daw's, no problem.

@payne: hmmm tunefish seems to be unusable for 64k because on the site it said that the released version need some c++ dependencies who make it bigger in size...

What kind of deps Rez?

@rez: then maybe I was not clear enough on the website. I should check those texts again :( Tunefish is used in all our 64k's and it's contained in full source in turtles all the way down source code. I think I will use the next weekend to make a nice tunefish source package with some documentation to make it easier to use. I wanted to do that for ages now ;)

It is not dependant on any libs btw

The plugin based setup of Ferris's WaveSabre is rather bloody good. Having the work flow in a modern DAW really does help and also the plugs themselves are rather bloody.

Heres another example of the synth in action by myself and Ferris from Sundown last year, in case you wanted to hear it. https://www.scene.org/file.php?file=%2Fparties%2F2013%2Fsundown13%2Fnew_school_executable_music%2Fhoffman_and_ferris_sabrewulf.zip&fileinfo

We've pushed ours to the production state, did couple of tracks but then were pretty much idleing due to the lack of competition in 64k =(

Quiver was never really a public option.

Fortunately, I am working on something much better. (At least wrt versatility, size and linkability. It sounds about the same, so far :)

Masochistic Renoise musicians who understand a bit of programming are welcome to write me at ralph@revivalizer.dk if they want to give it a whirl for exe music or 64k intros. Still only alpha quality though.

I am kinda planning to release this synth at some point (used in mercury-64ks since 905509 :D). the reason I didn't do that yet is so much stuff is unfinished and/or buggy, and it's a bit of a cpu hog.

apart from the internal mixer it's a pretty basic synth, actually. each instrument is just an array of 16 "operator slots" that get processed linearly. IMHO it's the post processing effects that make this synth. :)

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like there are some very good synths out there. I will take a look at the ones which are public and hopefully we might see some new synths get released soon too!

I thought about making my own but I am worried it would take me a few months just to learn the theory of sound synthesis and then many more months to make a working version which is not awful. Maybe it can be a long term project for me.

Nice thread!

We started years ago with just using v2. And only after a while we started working on our own synth, Pandora:

It's a VST plugin, and we've been using/expanding it since we used it for the first time in 2008. But we don't really have plans at the moment to release it to the public or to opensource it.

to be fair, the same applies to graphics programming.

You are correct red. But I am still learning graphics too! I am just an amateur programmer, I just try to do what I can in my spare time and when I see what the top groups like Mercury can produce I just don't think I have the time or skill to do anything like that.
