Moroder's video - what the hell is that

category: general [glöplog]
versatillia, great that things are getting discussed through! Especially since in the past similar things have not gone so well for Demoscene artists.

so, can we have Giorgio track for free demomaking? an open compo perhaps, would be awesome :)

this would be awesome indeed!

I would love a free for all "make demos with this Moroder track"-compo. Somehow, knowing what legal wankers the good people at <RECORD_COMPANY_REDACTED> are, I'm sadly thinking it's never going to happen.

not only the record companies but copyright agencies like GEMA as well.
here in germany an artist (which is signed and as such member of GEMA) would not be allowed to offer one of his tracks for free use.

I love it how you guys are all trying to feed off this situation... *sigh*

Well, that's everybody's good right I'd say. Some have an opinion, others have rather opportunistic ideas, then some rant and the odd one out is the silent onlooker.

Happy to hear it's being resolved in what seems like a professional manner. It *looks* like someone tried (mr. Jai) to pull a fast one and didn't get away with it.

People do this all the time, and just as many try to feed off of such situations. Welcome to the world, *hands introductory flyer* :)

@Devistator how exactly is it "feeding" to wish for things to be better?

I don't think he meant you, unless he overlooked the part where you said "I would love <...>".

I'm pretty sure a musician like this is free to do something like that though. But Visy, picture trying to sit through a 20+ democompetition where all demos have the same track and most suck :D

Lesson is: don't just say yes when someone from sony/moroder/basically anyone contacts you for usage of your demo/music/graphics. You let them make a contract (at least a summary of how it is going to be used, credits, rewards) and if you agree you sign it. When you keep it vague things like this are bound to happen.

Of course it is much more fun to just bash the shit out of sony but so far it seems it is handled pretty reasonably.

exactly what devistator says. still, if Sony wants to donate exclusive rights of a Britney Spears track to a Kewlers demo, i'm game! In fact, 90% of those visuals are already done!

Personally, apart from the novelty of the thing, I don't see why demogroups should seek out collaboration with commercial musicians, when the scene is writhing with excellent musicians.

It would sound weird if musicians seeked to collaborate with commercial visual makers (let's say ILM, Pixar) and release demos.

@aMusic: well what direction to go in with your own, self-contained, non-commercial (at least primarily) project is completely your own choice, right?

If I'd hear a track and think "hey, this is it" and think I'd have a shot at securing the rights (once did that, didn't make the demo though, but that's another story) why not? But you're right about the classic demoscene ratios:

- Lots of musicians.
- Less graphicians, even less real good ones.
- Fair amount of coders, just a few who deliver constantly (of which I am not one, just to state the obvious).

It's outta whack :)

For what it's worth I enjoyed the Spin track more than Giorgio's new one.

Hum.. personally, I don't see human activities as box where one activity end where another one begin. The only thing which could be problematic is the rules involves when it's a commercial, but even then... the rules are made by humans (not god :-P). I know that some people or group in power might be abusing of their authority, but I still believe that most people could be fair play and friendly.

you're using the same white for the background in that video as the white in moroder's album cover font.. LAAAAAAME!

this was the original album cover that Jai Lewis did but Giorgio didn't like it as it lacked rhinos:

i don't think missreading versatillia's explanations does anyone any good at this point.

Then he'd better improve the clarity of his explanations, because it's as clear as potato soup. That begets misunderstandings.

So far any offers of clarification all lead away from public scrutiny: contacting him personally rather than out in the open, requests to not raise a merry hell out of respect for Moroder and responding to questions with what appear to be liner notes from the book of "my client".

I don't blame anybody taking a suspicious stance in that light, potentially misreading whatever versatillia's intentions are.

The Video is not on youtube anymore (At least for us Germanz)

"Dieses Video ist in Deutschland leider nicht verfügbar, da es Musik enthalten könnte, über deren Verwendung wir uns mit der GEMA bisher nicht einigen konnten."

Bad evil GEMA, so I can't even have a own look at the matter....

Off-topic, but it's trivial to watch GEMA-blocked Youtube stuff here in Germany. Just use a service/plugin which provides a VPN connection (Zenmate or similar) if you don't have convenient accounts in foreign countries through which you could tunnel your traffic :)
