You can actually use 16 colors in CGA
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composite_artifact_colors

The image i posted above, is a legal CGA image, it's converted instead of pixelated manually though ;)

So why does nobody ever use one of the other palettes? I thought there were 3 others. Or are those just absolute garbage?

Only with NTSC composite though (or a 160x100 tweaked textmode).

To spell it out a little more: The real power of c64 gfx comes from the "hackability" of the machine and its VICII chip (leading to dozens of graphics modes, a lot of them "invented", using up most of the available CPU cycles), the incorporation of hardware sprites, timing tricks, charsets and a still nicer looking palette. This gives you much more flexibility. Sure, you could do CGA stuff that does not look horrible, but it's more work for little gain and there's simply nobody that could be bothered. :)

Not meaning to represent a CGA position here ;) but quite some hacking can also be done there

c64 isn't just leetspeak for cga?

so c64 graphics looks better
so?
super vga is even better
then?
i though we deal with "cool" stuff. the cga looks cool for me in an old kind of way. if you want better stuff that looks better why look back?!?

Yeah, tweaks and hacks aside i'd put it like " ... CGA < C64 < EGA ..." and loads of formats around that. But more interesting is, what do you exactly want to do? Pixelate? Write an engine? Something else? Are you bound to CGA hardware? Is it just the color/resolution restriction? Becomes not too clear from the previous posts in this thread ;)

You're making no sense. CGA and C64 are from around the same time, and stuff done on C64 looks way better than anything done in CGA.

You yourself asked why C64 is better than CGA, and we gave you examples. And using both CGA and C64 is "looking back" :)

Is there even an Editor for Composite CGA? I've got a NTSC Monitor and at least two CGA Graphics cards with Composite output...

Why is C64 better? Because a C64 cost less than a CGA card.
C64 graphics are better because they look better.
