Announcing The Meteoriks - A new demoscene award

category: general [glöplog]
To be honest, after following the jury discussions I'm pretty sure an 1337 jury would come up with pretty much the same candidates as a jury of "average" (if you wanna call it like that) sceners. Maybe not exactly the same candidates as yours, but then again you're not a one-man jury. :)
Also I'm not really sure if the "one member per country" restriction would change anything - are people really that childish?! It didn't even cross my mind to prefer any candidate over another based on their country.
The concept of selecting jury stinks, no matter how you organize it - it will be always an arbitrary decision and the results will be biased.

Why not anyone that is a legitimate demoscener (look below for "definition") can be part of a "jury" ?

This open voting system could be applied to different aspects of a demo/intro: artistic direction/visual effects/technical novelty/etc...

Additionally, a voter could decide if he is an artist/coder/musican, so appropriate weights would be applied to his votes. Say: if you are an artist, your votes will weight less for "technical novelty", but more for "artistic direction".

Moreover, weights could be applied depending on your "active demoscener" ranking i.e. how many contributions you have with a proper/valid credit (also possibly multiplied by the ranking of very prod?); So, if you have 0 prods, your vote doesn't matter at all ;)

Anyone can be part of the jury. However, if you mean "anyone on pouet", then your "awards" would simply turn into "prod with most thumbs on pouet", and we really don't need an award for that.
Seems logical, Pouet is nice but it already has its Top List statistics per year.
Meteoriks is really an independent award.
I find it refreshing it's an award not linked to a website actually, come to think of it.

There were some minor hickups but it is already pretty sturdy for a firsty imho. If only the orgs follow through with their promises stated on their landing page (already stated before in thread) and/or through email, their credibility can only grow upwards from here on :D
@Saga Musix: I thought I'm pretty clear that "active demoscener" is not "anyone on pouet".

It could be an independent voter list - you would still have to apply to be a voter first, but the system should be totally open and there shouldn't be any restrictions.

The other question is how would be you automatically estimate your voting-weight - this could possibly be taken from your pouet/scene id profile, unless you can afford to verify every voter individually (the tedious way).

*shots my mouth's inside using my gun, causing I have became inactive anymore*
Make a pouet award then :-)
Nope. Cuz I will look at Best of Demoscene 2012 & 2013 at "YOUTUBE"
sorry.
For me, a demoscene award honoring the best productions of last year as a whole should always be something "more" than a "prize giving". Every party has a regular prize giving already, this has to be different.

As such, a lot of what I tried to do the years I was event director at the Scene.org awards show was to go towards that goal. To make them special (the DUB awards are special too, but in their own, completely messed up, way. That feels more like a jolly joke). To make them stand out. To have a bit of glamour and make people feel special just for having been nominated.

Coming from that angle, I felt the Meteoriks fell somewhere short (and not only because of having one former scene.org awards presenter and one DUB awards presenter together on stage - thus messing up the intent / message from the get-go). I felt I was watching another prize giving, which was bad for me personally. Then again, maybe that was the intent all along. But then, don't try to do more than you want to do.

Also coming from that angle, I fully agree with everything Smash said. Like said, an award should be special. You should want to win it. For that to happen, you need to respect the people who decide if you win or not - you need to to believe that they know what they're talking about. The way this was handled, I didn't end up with that feeling at all.

PS: I hate elitistic speech, always have, this is not about that.

PS2: The first person to say "join the jury" gets a cookie. I'm already well aware that I don't posses the required skills to judge a demoscene production in any of the categories this award had. At least I'm willing to admit it.

.. when that is said, congrats with pulling anything off at all. Creating an award show at a party is damn hard logistically, including everything from contacting nominees beforehand to ask for a representative to hand the award to in case they can't be there, to try to get havoc into a suit for the ceremony itself (totally impossible, as it turns out).

Fully agree with Leijaa.

The best thing about the scene.org awards in my opinion is the fact they generate a list of "cool things to go watch that you might have missed".

With the site design, I find that hard. The awards themselves, the only one I care about is the newcomer award, which I'd like to think makes not just their day but their year.

Otherwise, I'm not a fan of "award" ceremonies. Honors is epaulettes.

we can solve this elitism problem simply by applying the rule: if you're not on one of the DUB battle cards, you're not l33t enough to be part of the jury!
I'm just wondering... did the jury actually pick any bad nominees?

It's hard to tell because with the current system there's a chance that a certain prod you feel missing was simply not submitted.

This "nominate yourself for the award / jury" thing felt kinda awkward from the beginning, and the ceremony itself felt really flat compared to previous years' Scene.org awards. Also some winners / nominees were far off from my taste, but that's just a personal preference.

I'm speaking for the high-end intro jury (gizmo/fr, hellfire/haujobb & me)

we of course ranked ALL submitted prod, the good, the bad, everything, and...

...we added to the list all the "missing" (non submitted) intros, and the all of use made a sorted list of our personnal 5 nominees and merged (pretty easily) the 3 lists into the final one.

(I hope we didn't forgot any good prod, but since no one complained on the results, it seems that the results was pretty ok).

I feel confident the awards will progress and evolve into something better each year. This year was a rush job but still I think the endresult was more than decent. I'm sure saying 'decent' in the context will upset some people, but taking the time-constraints into account, I'm very happy that we actually got around to making it all happen in the first place.

So yeah, is there room for improvement? Oh yes. Am I happy with the final endresult, the show, the videos, the nonineees, the jury and everytjhing? Yes!
There might have been some letdowns. Some people here posted constructive, well-funded criticism. I feel confident the team which made this all possible will act accordingly where possible. I stepped into the awards three weeks or so before the actual show took place, but I'm more than willing to contribute again next year. It is good to have an event like this. I would even go as far as to say it is an integral part of the demoscene, when executed properly.

So well on-topic: we have a vacancy for a video-editor, who is in? :)

"bad" nominees / winners? that's not really the question. in any awards ever, someone will find a reason to disagree with some of the winners or nominees. that's not the matter in question. finding a "perfect" list of nominees is not the point, nor is it to find the average opinion of everyone with a pouet account, to pick an agreeble list, etc etc. public's choice is the popularity contest there.

if anything a challenge an awards jury should be able to take up is to try to find things which are below the surface, that the average viewer may not have picked up on - perhaps something that's exceptionally difficult to pull off and done exceptionally well, maybe something particularly innovative, but not flashy enough to have gained a lot of attention the first time around. pointing to those things and saying "hey, look at this again - this is great because". or perhaps skipping out on some of those things which were all mouth and no trousers. and yes - i do believe that process requires a "trained eye", or whatever you want to call it.

also please note that i'm not trying to pick on the jury here and say they aren't leet enough individuals to pass judgement - i'm saying i don't think the process for creating the jury was the right one.

btw, the reason credibility, gravitas and all that jazz is so important to an awards process is that even if you disagree with them you still respect their decision and assume they must have had a good reason for it. :)
