Assembly 2015

category: parties [glöplog]
yzi: I agree that the people make the party and the scene. If the people and scene wish for organizers to touch entries it can be done but for that to happen a lot larger discussion is needed than just single thread on pouet. Assembly compocrew makes that decision for asm and the main organizers have the last word. I get their idea that they don't want people to attend with entries and say "Here's my demo, have your sound guys make it good/better."

I'm all for toning the SPLs and bass down. Just because your system can go to 11 does not really mean it should. While the compos suffered by far the most from excessive noise, I'm going to complain about random commercials / announcements / whatnot too. Having to jam earplugs in when yet another aural assault hits and taking them out when I want to hear people around me gets old pretty fast.

I noticed on a couple occasions kids holding their ears when walking near the main stage. Smart. They'll live to hear another day.
Kids these days! When I was young it was the kids who were making all the noise with their huge sound systems.

Trlikk: I know some entries are intentionally in mono, but I watched the stereo meter during most of oldschool, 1k, 4k, and demo, and it was pegged at 1.00 (full correlation between left and right channels) during almost all of it. (Off the top of my head, only a few oldschool demos were in stereo.) And then went to much less when audience participation sounds were included, so I don't think the correlation meter is broken.

I also spot-checked the published captures, and they were all mono as well, so something must have gone wrong in that step, not the streaming.

FWIW, I don't perceive this as a big crisis in any way; there are so many worse things you can do to stream sound. I was mostly a bit amused.

(If you wonder why I'm connecting stereo meters to ASM's streams: After Solskogen this year I have become interested in objective/automated metrics for making sure our own stream has reasonable audio, since the party place is obviously very loud and my own ears are sort of crap anyway. The obvious first step is to see what other parties are doing, and like I said earlier, ASMTV is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to content, so seeing what the meters show for them is an important reference point.)

Why do you hit each other with a tree branch after you have a sauna?
added on the 2015-08-04 21:44:39 by drift drift
After? Finns hit themselfs and others with a branch while they are in sauna, not after. It helps the hot air flow more and make the experience more painful, this is because all finns are masochist. Faster hitting and hot air may help blood flow better from your new gash wounds. After this experience you'll have the scent of birch and blood. This way finns attract vampires so they can mate with them.

Thanks for the answer. I hope one year to visit Assembly and I want to try and understand sauna culture so I can enjoy the full Finnish experience.

I also believe it is custom to jump in the snow or a cold lake after the sauna. Branch you can help me with the vampires and where to buy the best vodka when I visit.

I believe Assembly's saunas reach a whopping 8 degrees celcius especially when people throw an entire bucket of water on it straight away.

On the sauna stove that is.

It is winter here in Australia, the other week it went down to 3 degrees celcius and I nearly died from hypothermia. Could have used some branch whacking then.

Assembly's releases this year was the best for last 4 years, not just like one cool demo and the rest...

However I think Assembly needs a separate compo for FINNISH METAL(I told that before), because if you want to win in Listening Music you just need to compose good metal, this works for last years...

and maybe it is good idea to add a new compo, 8k intro for instance..

Also... demo2 by ekspert got second place because there are dancing humanoids, only for that!!! Do more demos with good rigging http://www.blenderguru.com/tutorials/introduction-to-rigging/

IMHO the best works are:
monolith by andromeda software development
hold-and-modify by carillon & cyberiad & fairlight
hydrokinetics by prismbeings

MONOLITH: this work has music which you could identify as AMUSIC's by his style:
3:25 here you can hear those aMusic's notes ;)))
https://youtu.be/YFR-cJ4OM6M?t=207
Almost like here ;))):
https://youtu.be/65zm8ozcWl4?t=97

and I liked all scenes with particle system... all of them look very cool and alive...

Hold-n-Modify: Lassi's music... so pro.... that cutted tree forest scene... looks so realistic.. and the city scene with cool design tricks.. I like this demo because you can watch it again and again, it has so many details.. ... and black n white style, everybody tried to do something good with black and white this year, but only destop can do something really good...

Hydrokinetics by Prismbeings: I was sitting in front of this guy who made this... the bass was like wind when you were sit in front of the big screen...
The author showed that you can do interesting stuff with simple shapes and objects...
the synth are interesting, not ussual for 4k and I really want to know how he made such synth(maybe it is possible to share Patched data from 4klang) and the sounds reminds me QQ by QUITE:

Also AMIGA demo winner is really good demo, lets say AMIGAAAAAAAA!!!

Any word on when the seminars might be available to watch or download? There look like there were some very interesting talks this year.

They are all on the Assembly TV youtube page. They were up pretty much right after each one happened.

Thank you for the link drift! I did check an assembly youtube page but it didn't have them yesterday, I was probably looking in the wrong place.

I think it's not fair to discriminate a specific style of music, would it be metal, dance, hiphop, ambient, dubstep or anything else.

Out of curiosity, is it possible to have rough idea about how many demosceners/creativepeople attended Assembly 2015?

It's stupid but I have no clue if ASM is a 100-sceners event or more like a 500-sceners event...

Good question -- I was there and have no clue either.

wullon: kind of hard to say, definitely more than a 100, but I don't think quite up to 500... or maybe it is, perhaps abyss can shed some light on how many oldskool tickets get sold? Depends also how you count it, there are definitely more than a 1000 people in the hall watching the compos, but not all of them can be quite classified as "sceners" or whatever. Overall Assembly is definitely not something like Revision, but definitely not like The Gathering either (well, not that I have visited either...).

nobody>thanks for the feedback!

From my sample size of N=1 (asm2014), it also depends on whether you count people just hanging around in the woods at Boozembly (some of them barely even visiting the compos, it seemed?) as “attending Assembly” or not.

rage: thats what I mean, "Listening music" compo in Assembly is Finnish metal music compo with some other music.. If I don't like or do not compose metal I am discriminated
added on the 2015-08-06 04:20:39 by keen keen
Yes there's always more metal at Assembly than other parties, however, we managed to get 3rd position with totally non-metal Amiga mod (maybe because of the 30th birthday :)) 2nd position wasnt metal and 4th was very nice tune by ruuvari, also no metal.

It would be great if there was a separate tracker music competition and streaming music competition also at Assembly, the way it is in Revision, but I don't think that's going to happen anymore. The gaming has taken such a big part of the event.
