Future Demoscene Trends

implementing surround at a demoparty could actually be worth investigation. it's well established, mature technology (as long as we aren't talking cutting edge stuff like dolby atmos installations). ordinary 5.1 multichannel for highend demo and music, probably fallback to pro logic encoding for amiga and tracked stuff (that could work, right?). also, a dedicated lfe channel is sure to make gabber content more fun.

Yep. 3D sound discussion is here...

I can see my initial plan of kidnapping didn't get much support.
It was daring i know. so into phase 2 we go..

BLACKMAIL

Some backround.
I had noticed a pattern. There were three of em at varying times.
I would go out to my porch and see one of em staring at me. The moment i turned my back they would dissappear like magic not to be seen again that day.
i was transferred into my past, into time when we had just started doing demos..
Me my friends and a coder.

Everytime we turned our backs to him it was slacker central, chips and coke excess. We didn't have internet but i bet if we had it would have been used.

The old phrase "Cat like typing detected" made now sense.
Doesn't it look just like CODE!

In captivity cats sleep more than in the wild.
I had tryed years to get coders do my bidding but they just don't follow commands. All i got was talk about motivation.

Then a secret list was posted on Friends BBS. It contained the names of some well known "coders"..
Here's a taste:

216 - Mittens
Kurli - LaPerm
Smash - Snuggles
Sivu - Mr. Puffins
Wildfire - The Afghan
..

The whole list is like a black book of terror for them..
100% PROOF! Coders are CATS!

2nd phase begins..

BLACKMAIL: Operation Kitty Panic

In fear of exposion im confident that we finally succeed in
MAKING A DEMO ABOUT IT!

The world may now !

But seriously, people keep saying "the demoscene is dead/dying" which is a false statement. It's actually going at a steady pace, according to statistics done by Gloom.

And yes, it's a good idea to try new things if you can. Just be responsible!

I think it's been a meme since the late 90s at least. I think most people don't actually mean it when they say that.

Anyway, what I like about the oldskool demoscene is that you know exactly what is going to change in the future: nothing :)

INPUT DEVICE
- 3D scanner
- dream reading machine

how about..

keyboard
mouse
joystick

or pushing it out there a touch

midi devices
network (via web page/gnurocket etc)
kinect

Apart from in the wild category 'because you can' there is little mileage going to be gained from pushing for edge case input tech because the existing input devices out there aren't being used to make interactive demos (apart from the ESC key!)

this man is a visionary! wait a minute, isn't this the same visionary who two days asked which tool to use to learn how to make demos?!?!?!

Before implementing surround more demos should have a sound fx layer pass to be honest. Lot of decent fx these days would benefit.

sound fx

yes. but no surround..
demos should be done on basic equipments that majority of people have. not equipment that midle-aged cubicle workers have.
or the compos are soon who has the most expensive platform and wins..

surround is not a problem, since it can be downmixed to stereo.
also think about typical highend gfx card demands. only middle-aged cubicle workers can afford those.

good point.. the target demographic (no pun intended) as far as running capabilities is very narrow, and isn't 'everyone with a pc' like it used to be on other platforms and in early PC days. this is why high-quality caps on youtube channels like "Demoscene High-Quality Videos (Annikras)" get so thousands of hits. demo for party screen, then for youtube!

after a bit of further thought I now think demos should not have build in sound, they should be accompanied by live music done with obscure instruments by sceners wearing sunglasses and bowler hats. of course, voting should be restricted to ferrets.

The demoscene is primarily a display of computer generated content presented in an artistic form.

When we invented Photoshop, we didn't stop Watercolours, Oil Paintings, or Charcoal Drawings, did we?
