How do you watch demos?

category: general [glöplog]
There's many different ways of watching demos: original hardware, emulators, videos, or combinations of the above. However, for most, real hardware is not an option, and so I have set up my retro stuff in order to watch demos primarily on emulators. I recorded captures of those emulations for my smartphone, simply because it's severely limited in emulation options, but if the MP4 files are on my PC, I prefer to use the emulators to watch the demos.

I discovered that depending on the amount of movement in the visuals, the MP4 files can be huge compared to the original executables - any C64 demos that has got interlaced IFLI images is one, and Total Triple Trouble by Rebels is another - and so it's a bad limitation. Also the fact that these are raw recordings, done with Nvidia Shadowplay, and I can't edit them for free.

I'd ultimately like to watch demos, with WinUAE, etc, on a Windows 10 smartphone. Tell me why I can't do that, as some have told me? Windows 10 works with WinUAE, so why can't it work on a smartphone?

I can't even begin where to unwrap this trainwreck of a post.

Don't like my post? Don't post bullshit in it.

There's enough in it already. But even disregarding the rather ill-conceived idea that you want to have correctly interlaced visuals on a smartphone, maybe start by looking up what the difference between a desktop OS and a smartphone OS is, then maybe look up why emulation is against the TOS in app stores - you know, stuff that was news 6-7 years ago.

Well, I did write it when a bit drunk.

I never said that. I said that the size of the MP4 files was based on how much motion was in the original demo, and that flickering on the C64 images would most likely add to it, due to the way the Shadowplay encoder works.[/quote]

I thought the only difference was the interface?

TOS? Are you suggesting that emulator apps on smartphones are banned, or something?

Real hardware or nothing! And if you can't afford the space for real hardware at home, watch demo at parties instead!

It's not so much watching them, it's more like listening to them when I go out. This thread is more about do you watch it live or on video, emulated or not?

I can't afford neither.

I'm suggesting you look it up :) We're talking about common knowledge at this point.

Yeah, I've looked it up since, and I don't know why it didn't occur to me already that banning would be the case, based on the copyright issues involved. It sucks, but that's always been the case, that emulator ROM sites say that you should own the original game already before downloading the image to use in an emulator. It's essentially copying the game without paying for it, even if it's decades old. I could argue that I'm not using an emulator for gaming, but it's really a grey area. I wouldn't be surprised if the same will apply to demos before long, if it doesn't already. It's just I thought demos were free.

if its about listening.. why dont you just get a decent mod player like zxtune and get the soundtracks of the demos?

I've tried lots of mod players, including ZXTune, and most of them suck. There's almost always a problem with some tracks but not others, but those others break in another player.

I wouldn't mind software that would enable me to use hotkeys to record audio and immediately convert it to MP3s, very much like Shadowplay lets me do it with video, but I haven't found one that works properly. If anyone can help me with that, it would be much appreciated.

Eh, or just use keepvid.com or some browser extension to download the m4a audio directly and just play that without needing to do ugly lossy transcoding. Most modern smartphones can play those right (I know mine can)?

Cool, I'll have a look at those. Thx!

Most of the time I sit on a chair. And depending if I'm in a demoparty, I also have a beer in the hand. That's how.

Can anyone attend a demoparty? I've always had an interest in computers, especially retro computers, but I figured that to attend a demoparty, you had to contribute something to it? I've coded a couple of games for Amiga, and some graphics stuff and utilities for PC, but never a demo. Can fellow computer enthusiasts attend, even if they're not part of a group or don't even have a handle?

Yes. For you we just might make an exception, though.

I've always felt the same way, only wanted to go to demoparties if I have something to contribute. So I didn't go for... about 14 years.
By then I'd learned OpenGL and sizecoding, rough rudimentaries of synthesizer design, at least a bit of color theory, etc etc. This allowed me to do my first 4K, which turned out rather crappy, but was good enough for me. :)

So let me tell you with proper authority: Don't do what I did! You can totally come to demoparties and enjoy them. Nobody will judge you.

But it's OK to feel a little bit bad for not participating, and using that as motivation to start doing things yourself. :)
