Little Bitchard 20y PC demoscene compilation

category: music [glöplog]
Reposting this from FB so that demosceners not using FB can chime in..

I've been lately giving a lot of thought to making some kind of personal "20 Years of PC Demoscene" compilation / set. This is because the first PC demoscene executable release I contributed to, Gamma 2 by mfx, was released at The Party 1997.

Trouble is, I have hard time of deciding what to include on the compilation. As I'm thinking of doing these remastered versions by rendering individual stem tracks from original project files, obviously doing EVERYTHING I've ever released is way more work than I can handle for a planned release date of 2017. Also releasing everything wouldn't make for a very enjoyable compilation..

So I thought maybe I can crowd-source this selection to YOU, my dear fellow demosceners :)

What I want to know is, which of the PC demo soundtracks I've contributed to or music compo entries I've done enjoy listening to the most and that you'd like to see given a proper remastering treatment?

Please chime in by replying with 3-5 of your favorite songs of mine. I will then pick a bunch based on the highest amount of votes cast on this thread + FB +
Twitter. As my plan is to release this compilation on Bandcamp, Spotify, Itunes etc. I will thus have to rule out anything with obvious copyright issues. Other than that, it's a open vote!

For reference, here you can find the (almost) to-date full list of releases. Alternatively, narrow it down to either executables, music compo entries or video/wild compo entries.

Thanks for reading through!

Hmm which ones you rank popular / experimental?

For instance the Mikro (aka 'µ') stuff (Liquid, Mono pts 1&2) I will probably end up placing on a separate release. I wrote about a album worth of µ tracks back in 2003-2004 which were never released, mostly thanks to yours truly hoping to get them signed to some proper vinyl label (= never happened despite efforts). I recently re-discovered these tracks from backups, going all like "wow how did I forget". Not that this stuff is like solid techno gold, but still it would be fun to have them exist outside the personal backups too :)

feel free to send them over ;)
..and what's missing from my website are the 2016 - 2017 Simulaatio / Assembly / Byterapers 30y music compo entries. Haven't been at all active with demoparties for quite a few years now, nor have bothered updating my website (which badly needs more work than the few occasional posts).

Both really a direct result of having things like family time hogging up your evenings & weekends.. Not that I'm complaining, far from it :)

My plan is to rework only where necessary, no worries there. As you mention 'Four Themes..' (the Cranium song) that would likely benefit from better quality reverbs or light mixdown clean up. But can't tell for certain until I try some stuff out ;). Obviously the older the song, the more it will likely benefit. Say for instance 'Diesel' from AH-CMC was mixed on Mel Function's home stereo (with 3-way passive loudspeakers iirc), and for it, simply rebalancing the mixdown on a subwoofer setup would most likely be all that's needed.

Anyway TL;DR - Most important reason for doing some remasters is to have them at a better quality (eg. FLAC on Bandcamp) and perhaps with lighter master limiting applied. Most songs in kwl/mfx etc. exe's are 192k mp3 tops.

The ones with proper melody & rhythm would be "popular", like 1995 or Variform.
Protozoa and Aether are more experimental.

I think the whole compilation should be a 2 hour remix of "Miehinen Transsitanssi".
