pouët.net

i'm considering adding NUP access

category: general [glöplog]
Dip: Should I know which group uses "BPS" when I only want to comment/ask on some Farbrausch (or was it Farb-rausch?) productions?
as long as google exists, all tests are passable without knowledge.

interesting idea, but if you close pouët.net it will be the death of new ideas and new audience

perhaps making a page with the actual rules of demoscene can be sufficient (like the law tables, just a few, but the most important ones, to describe the caterory of productions and the goal of this website)

and irc is not a good solution
lots of people have forgotten how to use it (including me, no irc client, no irc chat since four years)
suggestion : use skype, ask people to skype the glöperator if you want a direct chat with the newbies
other possibilitie can be a forum thread only for newbies, where they can speak about them before having a true account
Skype? You mean proprietary VoIP? IRC has the advantage of several people in one communication, backlog and so on. If you don't have IRC, it doesn't matter, there is a client in every Mozilla, there are webchats,...
whoring access over IRC is a bad idea imho.

how about making it "cost" a glöp to start a new thread?

that's a good idea kusma, then again, nobody cares about glops.. :)

nice idea but just look at optimus's score - we would be SO fucked...

Sounds like a good idea.
okkie, we had that discussion before and i for one would be happy to give my glöps away.

wait, actually i said i would want to exchange 10 glöps for a beer.

it's just that i don't like the idea getting closer to the topglöpwhores list, just because i leave my comment everywhere. that's just not right. it rather keeps me away from participating here. sad but, well, sad.

well, i didn't really mean that you'd _loose_ a glöp by starting a thread. my idea was that you couldn't start more threads than you have glöps. a pure anti-spam solution...

ah, to fuck over new accounts.. that's not a bad idea

There should be a mandatory journey to Okkie's Olde Clue Shoppe each time one wants to create a new thread.

Once Okkie delivered some kind of voucher, the guy would be allowed to create the new thread. Otherwise, he would only be offered a nice free cup of STFU.

imho pouet should remain wide open, that's the pouet pouet we love :) and po1's wonderscript is perfect to filter out annoyances :))

I disagree ps, making the registration painfull is a bad idea, pouet is nothing without the new users. And anyway, requiring an IRC connection to register is a very bad idea ;)

I dont see how this could keep people like Optimus and EP away from this site at all, and i dont see why we should keep anyone out at all, it would just ruin pouet.

If you only want to talk to people on irc, do it, theres #pouet.net - you dont HAVE to be here and read all posts. Personally i read 10% of whats written here, sometimes i read "spam" - if iam bored.

So, fuck this idea its stupid.

Clue shop!

If you think for one minute the traditional 'fuck off cunt face!' pouet greeting that new users get is WELCOMING - yeah, um, clueshop. And if you think this place inspires new folks? That, that one I'd like to see.

Mind you, our version of 'fuck off cunt face' is done with a smile. It's just, well, that smile can be somewhat missed when it's being tattooed into your skull.

Anyway.

I like pouet because it's like a bar. Sure, you CAN have a serious discussion there, but it's not only for serious discussion. And the bathroom wall has really, really interesting stuff. Sometimes it's pr0n, sometimes it's poetry, sometimes it's someone's dissertation. Sometimes it's an ad. Sometimes you need toilet paper.

If you wanna charge a door fee, hey, no problem, I know how to pay for friends to get in.
Let's think a little:

* We want Pouet BBS
* We don't want too much bullshit
* Some users say a lot of bullshit
* Any measure taken to block them out will be unsuccessful or severely restrict actual (and maybe nice) new users to join.
= Most conceivable countermeasures will work to the contrary of most users' needs/wants (a relevant BBS).

As long as Pouet is an 'open' DB and BBS, something which surely has contributed to it's success, we must live with these users. The only 'successful' countermeasure so far was the 'userstatus' as set by glöperators/admins.

So what about unwanted behaviour? Quite simple conditioning can be employed to ensure the disappearance of such. Whenever someone 'cross over the line', one simply starts to ignore. Ignore the user to silence. Most users who diplay behaviour that is undesired by most of us, crave the attention. Getting attention is their reward, being ignored is punishment.

Of course, when 'ignored' users say perfectly ok things and start relevant threads, one doesn't ignore. When you like something, you reward with attention.

While Poi's AWS is one way to do this, it may also block you out from 'the real pouet' and/or a lot of threads that might develop into nice ones. It's not like all threads by Optimus (for instance) suck.

Hope we can all agree that conditioning is the most efficient 'countermeasure' we have to battling repeated trolling
How about adding a delay to new accounts? When you make an account, you have to wait for atleast a day before you can post. And maybe new users should not be allowed to start new topics during the first week.

This won't be a big deal for people who seriously want to contribute, but it might be just enough to stop some of the fake accounts...
