Just a small issue with Partymeister. :)

The rankings were correct but the bars were wrong.

Okay - before the pitchforks come out, we'll clear up the situation when we've had a chance to decompress, I don't anticipate it being too long so just hold fire for the moment.

The results glitch added some confusion at first, but once it was clear the rankings were right and the bars weren’t it just added a lot of fun tbh :) So no pitchforks. Might want to figure out what happened and fix it for next year though.

Also, 10/10, would nova again.

hmm ok but ... i got the feeling that the list of the entries during the price-giving did not reflect the same order of playing as in the compos. it was very confusing too.

The list on-screen in Partymeister during the prizegiving normally doesn't reflect the playing order. AFAIK it displays the top seven ranked entries in a random order. The only thing wrong was that the bars had the wrong values, the rankings were correct (not sure they were legible on the stream though, depends on what quality you were getting ;) )

In a rather surreal turn of events, the NOVA shader showdown competition was featured in an article in the sports section of the i newspaper (a morning tabloid available UK-wide.)

You can read the online version of the article on their website: https://inews.co.uk/sport/nova-party-computer-coding-sport-exciting-f1/

That last sentence terrifies me.

well, but true. I often watch old shader showdown stream on tv. And it's at least 1.5 times better than watching it on computer monitor.

Thanks again everyone - best Nova/Sundown so far! Left the pplace at 12 noon, parked the car in fron of the house at 4.10am seeing UK in a day, behind the desk at 8.30. Never too old for that kind of stunt :) Congratulations to all involved, photos to follow once less uk-lagged.

Assembly was often on national TV and everyone survived to speak about it, why is it terrifying for you now?

How many people actually watched it from home? How many newspapers etc. advertised it?

(Assembly, that is)

I think what Gargaj hints at is a theoretical scenario where the focus is on consuming rather than creating - Assembly being shown once a year on TV is a different scenario than, say, weekly shader battles ready for braindead consumption on your TV. And there's certainly a point in this, given how (hopefully) the majority of the consumers in our community are also the creators at the same time.
oh yes, 'Europe's next shadermonkey' with a jury consisting of smash, simon cow(b)ell and a talking plush horse with fake polish accent! who wouldnt watch THAT?

I reckon the widest viewing that Assembly got, even with the clip itself being pre-recorded beforehand, was when Finland were hosting the Eurovision in 2006 after Lordi won it the previous year. Assembly featured as part of a pre-roll sequence between acts getting on stage.

What are you trying to say? That weekly live shader coding battles might decrease scene productivity or smth? It doesn't make sense to me at all, you cannot have those weekly battles without the participating coders putting in a massive amount of creative effort. If that's not enough I could also mention the (by now proven) potential of the Showdown format to attract new and successful faces to our scene. So what if people who are not active sceners also enjoy to watch our show? Will they steal my cookies or...? :)

No, it's not about the shader battles at all, it's just the example at hand. It's more about the general danger of a community that is all about creation to be flooded by people who are just there to get their dose of entertainment and who are not interested in the slightest to contribute anything back and constantly asking for more and more. They already exist, but they are few, certainly not the size of a "television audience" like in the prospect of that last sentence.
I wouldn't worry too much about a sudden influx of consumers. I'm fairly certain that that article is at least partly using "Competitive computer geeks" to make the point that Formula One, a televised sport costing billions and watched by millions is dull as fuck at the moment. :)

Still nice though. :)

indeed, the French grand prix last weekend was sooooo boring that for once I agree that watching two people type GLSL on a big screen to raymarch some kaleidoscopic 3D gibberish might actually be slightly more entertaining!

Sorry that you don't enjoy sceners actucally coding at a demo party.
