Democompo starts quite early this year.

It does. We decided to move it before the CS final to avoid major delays and major frustration caused by the delays. But don't worry, scene program continues in Scene Lounge and stream with Shader Showdown finals and more!

I'm too much of a capitalist pig to admit Eastern Europe could be ahead of us in any way, shape or form, I guess :P

Can we get a two hour extension of the deadline? I only found out about remote submitting here when it was already closed and would like to submit a demo.

Can you please contact us using email compo-contact@assembly.org and we see what we can do. Also others if you had problems with deadline do the same. We are not extending the deadline of the compos at this point but asking us never hurts.

Thanks for the nice party! The weather was pleasant and the improved Scene Lounge was comfy. It was great to meet old and new friends and participate in the Shader Showdown.

The demo compo seemed to have problems with framerates though. Some productions had visible judder. To investigate I downloaded the video capture of The Next Level off YouTube and dumped its frames with ffmpeg, and sure enough, it seems like every fifth or so frame is duplicated.

If this capture was also the same encode that was shown in the compo then my experience of judder would be explained. I understand that the AV team is very busy, but I hope you could improve on this next year.

This didn't ruin the experience for me and everything else was running very smoothly and on time. I had a good time!

There was something a bit funky with what the video stream looked like at the party place. Things that I knew should be full framerate looked jerky or juddery on at least the scene lounge's big screen, like for example my bicycle 4k intro and the winning oldskool demo. Both look just fine in Assembly TV's own Youtube videos, see bicycle thing, and PYO PYO. But on the big screen, no smooth motion was shown. It looked like the compo machine wasn't able to run the prods at full speed. Seeing that the Youtube videos are smooth, perhaps there was some kind of frame-rate negotiation and frame-dropping/duplication happening somewhere between the video source and the screen. Unfortunately I don't have video footage of the projector screen for comparison.

There have been peculiar technical details during previous years as well. During at least 2013 - 2015 the compo PC was apparently using a 50 Hz screen mode. I don't know why that was - accidentally, or perhaps to be compliant with the national TV broadcasts? These 1k intros use vblank frame-counting for music and visuals timing, and the Assembly TV capture is clearly running them at 50 fps, as you can see and hear:

* 2014 Assembly TV vs 60 fps capture
* 2015 Assembly TV vs 60 fps capture

This year it seems to have been the usual 60 fps that most people have and that works the best with Youtube.

Why I mention the past years is, I'm wondering, is it possible that there might have been some components somewhere in the chain set to 50 Hz video?

It sounds likely, given that parts of AssemblyTV is sent live on YLE (who I would suppose follows the EBU standard of 1080i50 production).

I'll also note that our 4k ran at a solid 60hz on the compo machine, but I'm pretty sure that I was not looking at 60hz on the big screen during the compo. The output to the three projectors making up the huge screen must have been demanding, so I don't even know if 60hz was possible. I heard that there were some teething problems with the new projector system, so maybe it's something that can be resolved for next year if it's possible.

There were few entries that were missing files (ie delivered through other means than uploading to PMS) so those might be still missing.

Hmm.. The youtube video looks really jerky, i'm pretty sure the source video is not like that. I'll have to check when i get home.

We use Atomos Shogun Inferno as a recorder. It is a very solid device capable of capturing 4k in 60fps and it is used in movie productions, so if something in the video is off then it is most likely happening before or after the capture.

I could say a thing about captures: they were few levels darker than what we saw on our own monitors (this one is calibrated to sRGB) - fex. Adapt - In The 90's...
Dunno whats with that. Thanks for the party anyway =)

Thanks for a baller party, great to meet old and new friends (and finally have some troubling questions answered ;))

Massive props to the shader showdown contestants, it was a really cool show! <3

Thank you all for the great party! Was good to see so many people in the scene lounge and hear the cheering for the shader showdown contestants and compo entries. I do hope to see you all next year too! <3

The video play back problems were very unfortunate. We are trying to figure out the root cause of it and ofc fix it before the next event. I do hope we get the wide screen and some special compo for it next year! :)
