이보크 / evoke 2019 | August 16–18 | Cologne Germany

category: parties [glöplog]
also found the results weird, (think lj should have won the 4k, jeenio should have won animation, irokos should have been top 3 in freestyle graphics, etc) but well, party results have always been weird, i'm done with that drama. concluded long time ago that compos are silly and that we should be doing showcases instead, but the consensus of the scene seems to be that competition is more fun, that some folks need a challenge to bring forth their A game, and well, it's part of the culture by now. i confess i didn't vote, maybe if i (and more of the visitors) had voted, the problem would have statistically corrected itself.

judging from the results file, 150 of the ~450 visitors voted. (and iirc about 250 logged in to the partynetwork)

eh? the whole point is that at evoke the better releases where ranking super low. Just look at the 4k by LJ for example.
Oh humm. Point taken concerning the 'raising the bar aspect'.

The rest of my argument is still valid, but I guess everyone has different reasons for making demos.I'm just saying it woudl be a waste if namevoting would be the reason why people stopped making demos.

Oh ffs, quit whining about the results. Just be happy that we have a wide enough selection of good entries that different preferences for aesthetics can decide instead of just everyone voting for whoever had most bobs on the screen.

And if you didn't vote then just silently tell yourself to remember that the next party.

Apart from that, thanks for a great party, I had a good time. See you again next year :)

i don't think so. i have the impression the whole "technical achievement" part of demos is not really important anymore (at least not to the people attending evoke).
it is much more important how many oldschool/fanservice references you include and the blockier/glitchier your pixels are. including some wet pussy apparently also helps ;)

yes, this all valid "digital art" (to some extend). but it doesn't represent the original essence of the demoscene for me anymore.

bring back the only demo art!
I had a rill good party, even working most of my friday night and saturday on entries! Good chats, always that great vibe and let's do it again next year (unless it coincides with Assembly tho.. :( )

What lugoober said, the 4kb compo was an embarressment of riches.

And to bring this back to the topic.... That was a fucking great party, thank you to all the organisers for all your hard work! Wonderful compos, dj's, craic, location, I even got to go for a good vegan meal just down the road.
spike: i remember people complaining about that 20 years ago. i'm sure you didn't just noticed it now :p

Also a reminder that during the 4k compo, the last entry that was shown didn't appear on the livevoting page until after the compo has ended (at which point people have dragged me outside the hall); that made me totally forget to vote for the entry altogether.
I'm sure I wasn't the only one who might have not voted on that entry because of this issue. Of course, I might be wrong.

You aren't. I noticed the same but I thought nothing of it at the moment. I went back later to update my vote, but I guess most people didn't. In retrospect this means it got 0 livevoting-votes.
Maybe somone from the orga-team is willing to confirm this?

It was indeed a very nice weekend with loads of fun and nice releases. You could invest in a better sound system though.

That being said, what about next year's date? That collides with Wacken and Burg-Herzberg-Festival and maybe even this other smallish summer scene event.

Evoke was awesome :D (It's consistently awesome but I'll never get bored of that kind of consistency). Wish I had more time to speak with all the cool people that attend.
Thank you so much to all orgas, and all the people that came and made it the landmark party it is.

I found that to be worse, there is only so much you can do with a single sample in particular if you cannot choose what it is...

Regarding voting: I was also quite surprised about the top two entries in the tracked music compo but what do I know...

Speaking of music: The volume seemed pretty low in particular during music compos. I mean, it doesn't need to be blasting your ears off but you could say it was way too comfortable to sit in the first row and not wear earplugs... so comfortable in fact that often the surrounding conversations were more audible than some parts of the music. The mid-range also seemed to be rather under-represented in the mix which might have contributed to that feeling.

Apart from that - awesome party, awesome people! Thanks for making it happen already 11 years in a row in this fantastic location!
