demotool uses outside demoscene

category: general [glöplog]

Notch is probably the best example of a demotool (at least originally) that is largely used in all kinds of places outside demoscene (Eurovision, gig visuals, music videos, art installations etc).

Jumalauta's demotool has been used outside demoscene at least in pro wrestling, conference slide system and art installations.

...so I'd be interested to hear in what kind of places demotools have been used outside demoscene. Please share some stories or examples! Thanks <3 :)

I know Hackers® 2017.3™ demomaking technology has been used in various installations atleast.

Disobey Network Visualization Gizmo - Visualizes traffic between all hosts in a CTF network (at Disobey security event)

Hacklab LED system - Installation which runs couple of shaders on GPU and distributes generated pixels (48bpp) to a couple of led panels. (And also has Pico8 integration by inputting pixels from pico8 engine via fifo and compositing them in)

And various other things. LimeSDR signal generation and decoding, adding effects into a music video, realtime tool to generate CNC G-code for complex washing machine front panel, .stl generation for 3D printing, esram packing, shadow map sampling pattern generation, etc.

P much all TBL PC 64ks were turned into screensavers for a company called Shortcut back in the day. Please the Cookie Thing from Aardbei was also created to become a screensaver later.

Lmao, remember screensavers? Shit's wild man..

I'm trying to find binaries, but with Shortcut going up in flames in the early 2000s, it seems all the files are lost forever..

hmh, i have heineken.exe on my external HDD that has backups of several old CD-Rs I found on my parents' attic... tried to run it, it then extracts/installs something but nothing happens (and there's no heineken screensaver in the options, so, whatefs)

and don't forget the amazing s-spline upscaling tool! ;)
apparently i also have some IXS music player in that dir and a random collection of IXS files :P
The Mercury demo tool has been used for some scientific visualisation stuff (in space physics, shortly after the release of fermi paradox): https://www.twitter.com/vlasiator/status/775664724394606592

okkie: http://dump.maali.nl/ixalance.zip (heineken.exe and also that IXS music player)

I can also remember some really ugly 3D street + snow particles screensaver, but apparently it was so ugly that I didn't bother to archive it or perhaps I did but I cannot be assed to check all the hits on 'xmas' :P
Wasn't there a demo made as promo for a video game once?
I can't remember much, besides it having snow

Maali: yo, don’t shit talk Christmas in the City, it was the first screensaver to hit a million downloads in 2002! Also as you can see Deadline made a JavaScript version, so it can be enjoyed forever.

To save time, the next Eurovision Song Contest's entries will be done in Compofiller Studio.

https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=119 demoengine was used the same year in annual Oulu rave for visuals. Setup had P450&TNT2Ultra + midi keyboard (Korg DS-1 was used) for changing the predefined scene setup and modwheel & pitch for modifying the setup. There were other keys, and one could launch more visuals on top of each other, then overload the GPU :D
This was then fed to a videomixer with other sources like live camera and videotape.

Think it was 1999.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPxE_S2NFBc

okkie: hehe, forgot that alex ported that... and i thought it was uglier but Rush Hour is worse! happy now? :P
Thanks for the comments so far. Nice to see that demotools have had fair share of action outside their normal use cases. :D
