" Hogmanay.party is a online demoparty taking place on 31.12.2020 to 01.01.2021. We're going to celebrate the demoscene, and we invite you to join us.

Sadly many of our favourite demoparties could not happen in real life this year, but that did not stop the scene. There's no substitute for yelling "AMIGA" at a real party with your scene family, but we didn't want to give up either. The scene was resilient and went online and many amazing parties have been had, bringing hope and happiness into a grim year. Thanks to everyone who's been a part of that, we want to celebrate you, and look back on how much awesome stuff has come out of the scene this year.

Revision was the first big party to take the online hit, and it set the gold standard for online parties just like it does for real-world parties, with high-quality delivery of high-quality productions. It was the party where Sofaworld was released, fulfilling our dreams of being able to urinate on everything, and most importantly showing us that lockdown could be an inspiration to make something better. Outline, Solskogen, Syntax, Flashparty, FieldFX, Novoque, Nova, Function, Jumalauta, Inercia, Demosplash, Assembly, and so many more parties have been held online. New prods have been made, new friendships kindled, new ways of connecting have been found. Novoque built their own social stream, Shader Showdowns have grown into Shader Royales, there have been regular streams from great people like Cranksy, psenough and Cowee. We sent each other cards through the Demoscene Holiday Card Exchange. Yes, it's still no substitute for real-world parties, but the scene's passion and connection is still burning brightly. We celebrate this!

So let us get together one last time in 2020, to feel proud of a scene that has brought raytraced HDR light to the dark framebuffer of 2020. To say fuckings to COVID, and to get excited for the possibilities in 2021!"

PS.
The site has few bugs/spelling errors and missing info those will be fixed in the next few days

more importantly, will there be a cider+beer+kilju in one glass seminar through which the presenter will sleep the last half?
I'm working on something :)

Partly a bit chaotic, but I really enjoyed this event. Also pleased with the results. Motivates me for 2021. :D

Shader showdown was amazing!

Brightened up my new year's eve, since my loved one was unfortunately 900km away.

So...thanks a lot again for organizing this! Happy new year!

Thank you for everyone that submitted demos and watched Hogmanay.Party you where amazing.
Thank you PS for hosting the Shader Royal, Alien for helping, Lynn for the DJ set, everyone that precipitated and helped it was awesome.
Thank you Hoffman for doing the Music compo big beat mix it was amazing.
Thank you subi and bossman for the dj sets they where amazing.
Thank you ps, aldroid, crypt for helping me it wouldn't be possible without you
Thank you truck, franky for preparing a demo show even if it did not go to plan it was great.
Thank you to various people that gave me support, advise and pointers it really helped.

I want to apologize how badly the party went as I feel like I have let down the people who spent ages making there awesome entries and the people that spent time to watch the party down.
I want to explain what went wrong and what I would do to fix it if I ever do a event like this again.

First was the audio issues with my webcam and trucks audio coming out on stream. I needed a interface/mixer and xlr mic but by the time I tried to buy one I could not get what I needed in time due to issues with demand/brexit I should have bought things a few months ago.

Second was the OBS issues the first issue was my GPU crashed a few hours before the party breaking my OBS setup and requiring me set up things again. The second issue setting up OBS again eat into my time to prepare the compos I set the deadlines to close to the party.

Third was I didn't expect so many entries and didn't make it clear I wanted captures of demos. Due to the OBS issues I had I didn't have time to capture demos and to pre-record the compos and check everything worked. I wanted to prereord the compos and play them in mplayer to make the experience smooth.

Fourth the site needed to be clearer I had trouble getting out a clear timetable and clear information across.

Firth when things went wrong I wasn't preprepared I needed backups in case things failed. I had to stall playing some YouTube videos at the start and I'm very sorry about that.

What I need to do fix things if I ever do this again is make sure I have the right hardware first like a xlr mic, interface. I also need backup hardware in case things go wrong. I need to have more help so I don't have so much to-do myself and can focus on things. I need to make sure I have backups in case things go wrong. I need to do more practice.

I hope this clears up what went wrong and why. I hope even though things went wrong you still enjoyed your entries being show and enjoyed the party. Please feel free to give me feedback so I don't make these mistakes again.

Thank you
reality
dont feel bad, you invested an awesome lot of energy into this and also got a lot of nice entries and quite a few happy sceners as a result.
in my experience as a party orga, i have some advice for you.

a) expect the unexpected.
no matter how good you plan or prepare there will _always_ be last minute stuff you have to take care of that wasnt planned it advance. include proper buffer-time for that - if you dont need it and can just chill for 30 minutes: even better!

b) dont try to do and control everything yourself
its true that things dont get easier with more people onboard but the skill is to find the sweetspot of organizers and more importantly the right people to care for things you just dont have the time, skill or energy to do. it really takes away a lot of stress and headache to distribute the load.

and finally
c) dont just focus on the fuckups and things gone bad. we are human we make mistakes and we also forgive them if somebody else makes them. i know first hand it feels like shit after a party, especially when the feedback comes in and isnt 100% positive - but believe me: people dont mean bad and appreciate what you do.

100% c) from wysiwtf, so, some big positives from me:

having a way to hang out on new years watching demos with you all meant an awful lot this year.

the shader royale was fantastic, a couple of new comers, a really varied line up with all sorts of stuff from cubic snowmen to glass labyrinths to h-mfing-plus being coded in front of us. it was brilliant.

11pm being marked. fuck it, and you're all still in the scene regardless of the politics of your country. i would have been distraught watching the clock if it wasn't for hogmanay.

the entries, i know mine and at least a couple of others would not have been made if you hadn't decided to host a party. you can take some credit for that..

technical difficulties will always happen, we wish it was otherwise and you got more than your fair share this time.. inertia's method last year of having lots of streams in the lead up to test was great, but i know you didn't have the time for that. so dont worry and have a home brew, or if you havent brewwed recently, a ridiculously high percentage stout that tastes of unicorns and myr ;)
focus on the positive.. you did great, people had fun, there were awesome releases..

the negative has been identified, you have something to work on.. but first relax for a while and then pick it up.. we're already talking about going thru some things so all will be fine...
