névoke rules

As we did last year, we will try something new this time. Many demo parties combine smaller compos to focus as many good releases as possible on the central "showtime". Since névoke
will be online only and one day only, we see this as a good model. Also, we try to take advantage of pre-recording and earlier deadlines.

However, we would like to go one step further: névoke will "combine everything", in advance, without announcing special compos. We will decide on compos only after we have received all the releases.

What this means for you is that there will be three major blocks to for which you can submit your productions: Graphics, Music, and Animation/Realtime will each have their own set of rules. These rules will be published soon. In the Graphics- and Animation/Realtime-Blocks basically "anything goes." The music compo will be played "in the mix" again, like last year.

And because even we, the organizers, don't yet know what competitions névoke will have – why not suggest one with your entry?

Always wanted to participate in a "tunnel effect compo"? Submit your entry to the animation/realtime block and let us know you would like to participate in a possible "tunnel effect compo". Then reach out to other demosceners to make them also create and submit corresponding works – and your wish might come true.

If you convince enough people to submit entries for your new favorite competition, we might even think about spreading different compos across blocks. Always wanted to know what the scene would do using only the word "FlimmIngo" as a topic? Get them to produce something!

To be clear, we will only decide what compos there will actually be AFTER we have received all entries. So basically, you can submit whatever you want for névoke.

Will it work? We don't know. Maybe in the end it will boil down to the fact that there will be the competitions that we have known for a long time. Or there will be utter mayhem. But that wouldn't be so bad either, right? So... ARE YOU IN?

as a quick headsup and to answer some questions:

deadline for all the entries will be 2021-08-09 00:00:00 CEST and we will try to "combine" compos into blocks of at least four entries each, preferrably more...

OK, so here's the first rule block - the music. Please note that unlike the stuff outlined above, this is a fixed compo format, which is not going to be split into different sub-compos or anything - but you already know the format from last year.

Breakbeats In The Mix /w H0ffman

If you produce electronic music, chances are high that you enjoy your tracks being spun by a
DJ – after all, a DJ mix, be it on the radio or in the club, is dance music’s natural habitat and
testing ground! So, like last year, we would like to provide you with exactly such an opportunity – but with a style twist! H0ffman, veteran demoscene musician and DJ, invites you to enter your hottest breakbeat-infused tracks, so that he can present your entries in a hot continuous mix. Want to be part of his digital record bag? The entry titles will be shown on the stream – so you can dance and vote at the same time!

• Format: WAV, MP3, OGG. If you choose to use any other format like MOD or XM, please provide both the original tracker file and a WAV, MP3 or OGG recording.
• Deadline: Tuesday, 10 August 2021.
• Maximum length: 4 minutes. Please take note that, due to the nature of a DJ mix, your track will not be played in full, but blended into the previous or next track. It is completely at H0ffman’s discretion when and how long to play your track.
• Speed: 125 to 140 BPM.
• Your entry has to be previously unreleased and consist of original material, i.e. no remixes and no copyrighted samples.
• You are not allowed to be registered with any copyright society. This includes, but is not limited to, all member societies of BIEM.
• This year, there will be no preselection jury – it is completely at H0ffman’s discretion whether or not to play your track. After all, you can’t force a DJ in the club to play your song either! So, before submitting, think about what kind of music you would expect H0ffman to play, and put some effort in production and mixdown.
• Stylewise, all sorts of breakbeat-based styles within the BPM range are especially encouraged – UK rave/hardcore, nu-skool breaks, future jungle, you name it!

The 140 BPM limit pretty much excludes the mentioned styles. 140 BPM is elevator kind of music, and not Rave nor UK hardcore. Rave is 160 BPM+, UK Hardcore is 170-190 BPM. And future jungle also is typically in the 160 BPM range.

I think those rules should be corrected in this regard.

Will bring it up with BPM folks to the rescue in the next meetup, in case it isn't spotted here.

Breakbeat (what we mostly consider breaks nowadays) is comfortably in the 125-140 range, it's just that some of the "example genres" at the end of the post are a mistake. Nuskool is 130-140, big beat can be around 120ish, tearout is 135-140, progressive is 130-135.

@scamp: obviously, we are not talking about the gabber-ish stuff, but the original early 1990s uk hardcore (as in the "hardcore continuum"). future jungle can be 160, true, but easily 140 as well. why 140 is "elevator music" is your own mystery. =) obviously, you need to go to a soundsystem session to experience even 115-120bpm music as a proper tear-down-the-roof experience.
anyway, yeah, the sentence might sound misleading if thought outside the uk bass music tradition, but not wrong per se.
also, maybe h0ffman hinself can say something on this, too.
