What is the sense of fantasy computers?

Even the first x86 CPU used microcode, so it's not a recent trend.

I stand corrected. But that just reinforces the point that there's no easy way to draw lines at a particular level of abstraction, and has not been for a long time.

If you develop your demo for Windows, you will probably even reach a broader audience.

Actually, it's very difficult to run modern Windows demos/intros even on Windows: all sorts of Windows threat detection shit gets in the way. Meanwhile, TIC-80 can run inside a browser, on pretty much any modern computer. And it's more convenient: you don't have to download a separate file, unpack it & run; just click the link. So I would say the potential audience with TIC-80 carts is far broader than Windows demos. In practice, well, there is hardly any audience for either ;)

No offence to anybody, but who cares if at the end the ultimate demo runtime platform is called YouTube.com. Either you link a video recording or this demo doesn't exist it seems.

Anyway, I'd love to see those fantasy consoles being reimplemented as FPGA and put into a real hardware box that is already popular in its niche (MIST/MISTER). That would make more sense to me.. otherwise I only occasionally get triggered by YT recordings for something that other already noted as spectacular for some reason.

@hollowone:
About a FPGA port of pico-8, there was a discussion. As far as i remember, there was a discussion somewhere else too.

imo the point of a demo is the process of making it, so.. yeah. Zero fucks given about watching stuff on real hardware =)

I think it's all in the challenge, and it's also the very core element of the demoscene. But that's not just limited to programming.

Let's make an example: even if I got access to DAWs like FL Studio on an octa-core AMD Ryzen 7 that could run something like 50 VSTs per session (and could, theoretically, even produce Billboard top 100 songs), I still like to make AMIGA ProTracker MODs. And also, I'm also planning to learn to use tools such as PreTracker from Abyss or AmigaKlang. Why do that, you ask? First, I like the AMIGA platform, and then I find making good-sounding music on limited resources a good challenge.

I doubt that most of the coders here want to "reach a broader audience". If they do, they wouldn't be here, you know?

It seems to me that the title of this thread is grammatically incorrect? Discuss.

Also it's kinda ironic that an editor of a diskmag of all things is asking for the sense of a certain platform. XD

Maybe he is researching opinions for an article?

says the person that writes articles for a diskmag that needs to be downloaded, extracted and run on a specific platform to be read

If you can think of a better way to share news and opinions than waiting several months then releasing it in an executable on a single computer platform, I'd like to hear it!

I think a pouet thread is quite ok for sharing news and opinions ;)

I'm not researching for an article. I'm not making Hugi any more. I was just curious myself and asked the question out of interest.

Pouet is far more efficient for sharing news and especially opinions than any diskmag could ever be.

it's just as senseless as the demoscene

But we like senseless things, don't we?

If by fantasy computers we mean stuff like pico-8 then their main purpose is to break the limited hardware based platforms that exist allowing to make custom platforms to develop things on. Nice concept but I would like to see it extended to 16-bit and 32-bit as well.

I’d like a fantasy 4090 so I could really rock some Notch effects

I can't believe that I have to log in to this hellhole to remind people they shouldn't engage in conversation on a thread started by Adok.

It's been decades already. Don't.

Adok is just an ordinary man who needs no special treatment.

I can understand why people are interested in programming on fantasy platforms.

But when fantasy platforms and real platforms participate in the same size-coding compo, this is beyond my understanding.

Any mixed compo if not "wild", really, especially when mixed with 16-bit. =)

It does have a sense of "we're out of ideas".
But hey whatever floats your boat.

But sourcecode-size coding is not sizecoding.
Binary sizecoding is not interesting.

but what about a shader minifier, ile ;)

question for the experts :)

Fantasy platforms have assembler? Logically, even if it is a virtual fictitious platform, it must have the architecture of the CPU, video subsystem, and other peripheral devices. And obviously, such a device should have its own assembler?
