Revision 2023 - Back to the E Werk - April 7th - 10th 2023

category: parties [glöplog]
This revision was weird and emotional overwhelming.
It felt like it was just last year, but it was 4 fucking years...my mind had a hard time to cope with and still has.

And we had so many new faces!
And so many of them had the guts to show their releases, even if they where scared as fuck.
Space-O-Lution by ScriptKidz for example, 12th graders who did this demo as a school thesis...in their release note they wrote that the crowd reaction would be nice not to be too harsh. Obviously they´ve had their pants full on how the crowd would react.
But they deliverred and got their well deserved applause.
Thats the spirit!

I talked to them after the prizegiving, cool guys who are willing and motivated to be back next year. hope they challenge the usual suspects ^^.

And as always i had not that much time (and sometimes not enough mental energy) to talk to everyone who wanted to have a chat, im sorry for that.

Orgawise:
Awesome team, awesome crwod, awesome scene.
But as perfectly as this clockwork seems to run, we should not not forget how important each individual component of this ecosystem is.

Every guest and every single organizer contributes to the success of this show.

So we can all pat ourselves on the back...even if some people may think that some ppl are more important than others: that's not the case.

I see that particularly with the infoteam:
people who carry boxes, collect rubbish, are respnsible for almost every dirty job, sleep little and work until they literally drop.
So next time you get a beer...be kind to the orgas at the front

To the sceners which are more famous than others:
I´d wish that you guys would show up in the newbie seminars and/or reachout talking with the newbies. Help us breaking the ice and inspire new talents.

For example:
I personally know ppl who still after all these years talk about that they have met the famous Smash^Fairlight, that Chaos^Farbrausch gave an advise during a chat or that they had a nice chat with Gargaj (sad that you couldnt make it this year btw)

Dont underestimate your impact fellas!
The newbie seminar is full with every year and we would really appreciate your attendance, even if its just for a meet&greet.

Whatever...i talk too much again.
Post Party Depression kicking in in 3...2....ah there you are. ^^

(No worries...i know how to handle that)

Great party, really needed that and i'm so looking forward to the next one ♥

Cool stuff:
- Most compos had truly amazing entries
- The pinballs were really cool this year!!
- meteoriks awards, hosts killing it as per usual
- h0ffman set
- BACK IN THE EWERK, one of the most memorable and catchy jingles of all demoparties EVER?!!
- 3way shader showdown was a blast, well deserved winner!
- wired internet was really stable and fast this time!
-

Suggestions for the future:
- Turn the volume down on KC demos, especially Shadow of the beast ports XD
- Uniform volume between compos and concerts maybe? I couldn't survive a minute during the last concert, even with earplugs, it was so obnoxiously loud. I had to communicate to my neighbor using notepad.exe :(
- Preselect PC Demos, I fell asleep after 4-5 entries :S
- bit more lighting in the hall between compos maybe? I couldn't see anything at any point, and being the clumsy fuck that I am that's not good for existing :DDD

- Please can we have the food stands from 2011 back? The pizza is an absolute rip-off and the grill somehow is worse too (the meatballs tasted like those microwavable ones from the supermarket) and if I ask for a brötchen I don't expect to have a small dough-ball of 3 cm diameter in my hand, anywhere else in germany you'd be shot for calling that a "brötchen"

EXCEPT the burger van, that one was truly amazing, pls more next year <3

(sorry i'm nagging a bit, the rest of the event was totally ace of course, dont let the amount of text fool you, i loved the shit out of it!!!)

Thanks for the awesome party!

That will be a truely memorable event, especially for our newbie/new member winning the 3d graphics compo. And I really have to point out Luisa and Oni doing a great job in being perfect darlings to our "new born"! This is how you motivate newbies to stay in the demoscene and find the deep love we all already found to the demoscene!

It has been so great to see all of you in person after so many years.

See you all soon!

THE BURGER TRUCK was awesome! Please invite them AGAIN! And even the concerts alone were worth the trip.

It felt like we never left. Arriving at half past one on Friday afternoon and basically every table row was already half full felt amazing - it clearly showed that we all badly wanted to have Revision back. And the party did not disappoint. After three years of mostly small parties, it was good to see so many faces again that I haven't seen for four or more years. And the compos were a blast! Totally didn't expect to win the tracked music compo which is usually ruled by ProTracker MODs, so that was a nice surprise. :) Can't wait to be back next year!

And about the PC demo compo... If you really want to change something about it, preselection is probably the only way to do so. Any other sort of metric mentioned in previous posts is going to fail.

@jco: Junk Yard high score for me was around 9-10mil, didn't keep track on Twister because I got annoyed by the ball getting stuck every minute very quickly ;)

And about the PC demo compo...

I think this year they didn't do a preselection because there was no 64k-compo. So there was more time.

People, 41 demos is an exception. This was the first Revision on location in four years, people were excited. This will not be a regular occurrence lol.

Agree with Okkie on that. We will go back to the „omg the demoscene is dying“ fud soon again ;)

Btw. Awesome Party!
See you next year.

Traditionally, there never was any preselection in this compo. Not just this year.

I think it may be if remote entries will keep being accepted. A quarter of the entries were remote after all.
great party! thank you everyone for making it possible!

Props to the person who timecoded all the entries in the YouTube-videos.
It me!
That used to take fucking hours, as in literally 6-8 for Revision Online 2022 where I had to spool through each video, type out the time of each slide, and then copy/paste the corresponding entry name from the results.txt.

Fortunately we finally figured out that we could just use the timestamps of when the slides were shown during the party, and with the combined powers of D.Fox's coding skills and my amateur level scripting/regex hackery, we ended up with a process that can spit out timestamps for a compo in under a minute!

Thanks for the kinds words though.

By the way: Is there a capture of the livecoding-jams running on the bigscreen during the DJ-sets.

Which one was that demo with the Danse Des Canards track? I fail to find it. Was it uploaded here yet?

I don't know for live video capture, but we will have sources on livecode.demozoo.org !
(no glöp so no link)

- TIC80 jam with cmdr homer : livecode.demozoo.org/event/2023_04_08_tic80_jam_revision.html

- djH0ffman shaders will be on the same website soon (actually some were part of a curated selection of previous jam and showdown)

- I need to ask cupe if he agrees to share his work that he done on lug00ber set.

I suppose there wasn't a local recording, but if one actually exists, it would be interesting source material for encoder tests. (Of course, one could go out and find high-quality captures of the worst streamkillers one by one, but, yes.)

After some time to gather my thoughts. What a great party! How wonderful to be able to meet again and have it feel so familiar. Really massive props to the organizing for pulling of the impossible, making it feel like nothing had happened.

So many good chats, so many people I wished I got to to talk to but only saw in passing or met very briefly. Hope to bump into you in the future! So many incredible entries, so much passion for this 'dumb hobby' of ours.

Happy to have been relieved of my hosting duties, it was my one wish to be fired on stage :D
(Then again, you can't keep me off a stage, organizer or not haha)

I love all of you, and I'm incredibly thankful for being part of this <3

I'd been to Mekka & Symposium, and I'd been to Breakpoint, but not to Revision. I finally decided to cross that off my bucket list. Well, it was supposed to happen in 2020 along with Area 5150, but those plans were obviously pushed back. I definitely enjoyed my time there and doing some quick tourism before and afterward. And I was able to compress three Pixel Art books and a Meteorik into my small suitcase successfully. :)

Some thoughts, in random order:

Sofa World VR is the best version yet, so detailed and lifelike! I did find Okkie in multiple locations, but sadly was unable to unlock the golf cart. :D

It was wild running into faces I hadn't seen in person since at least 2007, and meeting a few new (to me at least!) people as well. I'm still not super-social so I regret not introducing myself to more ppl like Hoffman and Virgill.

As always, the organizing was top notch. I think the only real compo delay was due to the wild compo running longer than expected, and everything after that was on the same 1 hour delay.

There were a good number of food vendors with good variety. I didn't get the burgers which were sold at Five Guys prices since I was running out of Euros, but it seems like people really liked them.

Respect to the info team for being on top of everything, and selling drinks at affordable
prices. +1 to the suggestion to sell snacks as well. I'm grateful for the free earplugs (I did bring a pair of my own but the desk was more convenient). Also thanks to kb and cyraxx for the beam team tour. It's really cool to see how the audio, video, and streaming setup has improved over the years.

Kudos to whoever brought the pinball machines (was it the same guys who made Cyberpin? I noticed some text was in French). It would've been cool to have an unofficial pinball tournament.. even if I probably wouldn't come close to winning. :)

What happened to the PC 64kb intros? (that's more directed at the scene, not the organizers :) In 2019, there were a bumper crop of quality intros. It's so weird how fast they go in and out of fashion.. is there some secret cabal of 64k intro makers who decide to collectively participate every few years?

It was fun running into fellow Americans merely by hearing their conversation as I walked by! Greets to Starchaser and MrSynAckster, and to the couple from Montana who were totally new to the scene and demoparties, hope you got hooked and not scared off! Sorry I didn't get your names, but if you find this post, contact me on FB (@vossanova) or email (xprojected (a) yahoo ,com).

And finally, the demo compos. It was a shame there weren't any killer Amiga entries like Eon or Batman Rises this year, leading to a rather eye-rolling victory. I missed some famous Amiga intro entrants like Lemon and Abyss as well. As for PC, I think it's time to finally consider the forbidden "P" word. Or maybe not accept remote entries? It was more fun when we were younger and crazier, but running to 3 AM ain't as fun as it used to be. I feel like some people entered crap and "my first demo"s (Reality Check aside) just because they knew they'd get away with it. Someone suggested running from perceived best-to-worst instead of worst-to-best, but of course that would be unfair to the later entries who would get fewer votes, and ruin the building anticipation. I did get a kick out of the farjan "marathon" which neatly divided the "bad" and "good" entries though.

So, between this and the 3-day music festival in the US I was at the previous weekend, I think I'm sufficiently partied out for a while. :) Now to unpack and unwind.

I knew I'd forget something: the live voting on the Revision app was a godsend. No way in hell I'd remember what to each entry otherwise.
