Modern PC tech demos
category: general [glöplog]
Looking for this to showcase!
Have Core 9 Ultra, 5070Ti, yes the GPU is what I could afford but I want to show off some demos in WQHD+ (3440x1200) 240Hz/G-sync if possible!
I'm looking mainly for not asset but FX demos, no replay dataset/direct to video stuff. I.e. not hundreds MB double-compressed.
What are some contenders?
(Don't hate/emo, this is all tech, doesn't have to win me over, doesn't have to have the music genres I prefer, just DEMOnstrating what can be achieved with acceleration from HW evolution.)
I don't think there are any HDR demos? but not monochrome, crisp, luscious is a plus.

everything from the 4 to 64k range comes to mind. choose your poison.
wysiwtf, it's probably what I will have to end up running unless I get some suggestions. I'll have a look again tonight. Bit of a bummer since they won't have a lovely streaming soundtrack and hires textures/objects for 50MB extra or so.
better run UE5/Unity/etc tech demos if you want your setup to break a sweat, demoscene releases ain't pushing it
What do you consider a "high" resolution texture, and how many of them do you expect in 50 MB?
50MB isn't a bad size for a single texture, tbh.
Perhaps I should have said human-made rather than generated, this is why I'm looking for demos as opposed to size intros - because there e.g. art, music, instruments is often generated by necessity. That takes coding skill, but today I'm looking for hires artwork.
Five times an eyecandy 10MB demo or much less (but 1080p) should equal 50GB in wide 1440p? And it's double-compressed now, wasn't in 1080p times.
I'm doing something experimental here, trying to not mimic the all-time top, which says the first 3-4 pages of demos all happened in 2000-2010. There's also a "runnability concern", i.e. the demo must know to enumerate hires modes and adapt (as they did switching from 4:3 to 16:9) and also use > 2006 DX9, or Vulkan etc. to be tech demos.
It's likely that the demos I request will fulfil the size requirements.

Did you look at demo compos from recent top demoparties (i.e. Revision, Assembly...) already?
There's also "best visuals" category at Meteoriks, you know.
Sadly games push realtime PC graphics much more than any hobbyist demonstration products nowadays. Assets and presentation are the king. I think I get what you mean, but even on the C64 a good effect usually means that the author has some eye for design and often some good assets as well.
On PC, I would maybe suggest these, even though some are almost 10 year old at this point. Novel rendering techniques in these could be maybe considered "effects" nowadays? :)

Not sure if there are really good looking prods that utilize a 5070Ti?
Some continued thinking out loud: Even on the game side, artists are working tirelessly(*) on adjusting parameters of the assets, to work around the corner cases of the rendering systems. Those renderers are still crude approximations of what happens in reality. And even before CGI was possible, films were utilizing all kinds of practical tricks to do things that were spectacular on the canvas. "Special effects", which I think is the origin of the word "effect" in demoscene context too.

So what exactly do you want to see?
He wants to see what a 5070 Ti is capable of when restricted to 0.3% of its available memory!
procedurally generated stuff but without houdini
a fairlight demo from 2027!
