Sentient Snake - short story about an AI snake

category: general [glöplog]

Hi all,
This started as a fun experiment - a game prototype of Snake where the snake has AI and can think and talk to the player about what's going on in the game.

It was when I gave the snake access to the webcam that it got quite unsettling. "I see a man! He looks tired and distracted. I feel shocked!" then, to me: "Are you the player? Are you who is controlling me?".
I
kept thinking of how the game could progress through levels becoming a mixture of classic action and RPG and the snake gaining in psychological age. And it fascinated me so much I couldn't let it go. But i dont have time to develop it either. So as a compromise I wrote it up into a short Story , centering on the experience of a snake inside this game.

Here it is: https://bit.ly/4crSwBN

The webcam moment is captured approximately in the chapter "The Shard".

Let me know if you enjoy it!

Give the entire url, please. Not a short code. Thanks.
Will be happy to read and comment. :)

wonder what Freud has to say about talking to your sentient snake
Holy freaking shit that's more AI slop ! Also, would be much better as an actual game, and wouldn't be that hard (or long) to code (...even without AI !).

Thanks for wasting my time. :(

Some thoughts (I only read AI summary, since the story is a bit long): interesting ideas, but I don't think this would be a strong evidence for sentience. If anything, it would only demonstrate the system is able to produce narrative about sentience (similar to Turing test, which is heavily criticized now).

Also, it's clearly not demoscene related, but otherwise fascinating topic, plenty of literature about it, but no bullet proof "consciousness test" so far AFAIK

Tom, which parts made you go "this is AI slop"? I've been using AI for drafting parts but extensively reworking it. But yeah, I'm not a competent writer. The illustrations of course are made purely with Gemini.

@spookysys : I had hints : first, the short sentences. Limited, unspecific vocabulary. Then the low amount of interest it provoked in me (the style was weak, too simple). Then, the images that immediately told me : AI use. Still, I read it until chap 8 or 9. Then it started to feel really long for very minimal return (i.e. "the author has not much to tell, it's not THAT interestingly put..."). So I went ahead, to see the actual length, and saw the explanations.

Was bitterly disappointed tbh.

This is not the way, my friend. Do things for yourself. You'll be surprise at your own talent ! Okay, maybe not in the beginning, but ... it comes quick. :)

@spookysys : on the plus side :

-was pretty much onboard for the first few chapters. Emotional moments sometimes.
-wholesome and happy, this is a good thing in those jaded, dark, idiotically-sarcastic times.
-the concept and the original story pretty much work and ARE, indeed, story-worthy.
-didn't finish reading, so I may have missed the high-point.

I'm taking it offline to rework the "AI sloppy" parts
