Prods that need capture for youtube

category: general [glöplog]

I have no idea what this is supposed to look like so I can't tell if my capture is good or not but in lieu of another, here it is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcOXIwaN4cI (feel free to add as the youtube capture in the prod info if it's acceptable)

This one, please.

A couple caveats:
1. I had to set resolution to 720p to get it running at a decent framerate, and even then it's well below 60 fps in most parts. I have a GeForce 3070 Ti, which is far from the best but is normally decent for 3 year old demos. :)
2. I couldn't turn off the full screen notice that appears for the first few seconds. It still showed up in Chrome Kiosk mode, and even if there is an extension that removes it I didn't think it worth trying. Firefox also worked but was slower.

I can take down the capture on request, or replace it when I get a faster GPU.

I wonder how much work it would be to make a CEF-based version of kkapture, since web demos are becoming more common.

I would love to see a capture of this 4Kb soap opera with Flip Flop Flying, with a cheesy background music on top. The title is "Boy Meets Pixel".

prost: I assume you mean the old ones, since all of them since 2017 are on Youtube.

Did you get permission from the artist? I found it on web.archive.org, but his website and Youtube page both seem to be down or taken by someone else now. Anyway here it is archived:

Replace the major components of kkapture with this?

The challenge in a kkapture-like system isn't getting at the image, it's slowing down all the clocks in the right way.

Hmmmm. I had a look at kkapture, and I am not sure if it hooks WASAPI and DX12/VK yet.

Using the DXGI display duplication would fix the DX12/VK problem, but as for audio......

Ancient Routines by Image! so I don't have to figure out how to configure GUS in DosBox.

I got some old pc dos stuff that i want to capture and put on youtube. I've been trying some out using dosbox staging and OBS but the result isn't very good. Are there some guidelines etc on what settings i should use.

I use DOSBox-X, and set the cycles to just enough so it runs smooth or close to what it did originally. It now has a menu dropdown showing equivalent CPU speeds if that helps. For captures I do not use cycles=auto or max. For Pentium MMX/II-level demos, it's fine to set cycles to something like 500000 where it would slow down and stutter in DOSBox. The capture will take longer but look fine. I usually just run "dx-capture /v demo.exe" without worrying about when to start/stop the capture.

You can try using forcerate=60 to set the capture to 60 fps, but check if the demo acts differently versus the original framerate (usually ~70 fps). In that case, leave forcerate blank and either convert it to 60 in Vdub or just leave it be.

Then, in my old but still effective toolchain, I enlarge the AVI in VirtualDub (nearest neighbor 2x or 3x, optionally bicubic down to 720p or 1080p) and save with a lossless codec (e.g. Lagarith). Then I convert it to MP4 in Handbrake (you could scale it down to 720p/1080p here too).
