Christian Simpson buys Commodore

category: general [glöplog]
Well, C64+1541+trackloader is already an expansion relying on proprietary hardware, as opposed to “C64+1530” (one-filer).

So? It's the established standard, just like 512+512 KB is on Amiga OCS.

calling the 1541 an expansion.... lol

Yes it is. It’s a standard. No question about it.

It would be interesting to know the ratio of Gideon’s U1541 to real hardware diskdrives in 2026. Of course U64 and C64U should be added to U1541 number. I’m guessing that some people use a real drive only because they have SD2IEC and not U1541, and still want to be able to run big demos.

@groepaz: are you autistic? Please don’t get offended, I don’t mean it as some kind of dumb insult. It’s just that you don’t seem to be able to grasp some analogies and abstractions. Like at all. You only seem to register the literal stuff.

Still seeing my loader pop out the old "WARNING: Buggy 1541U firmware detected. Please update." message at demo compos... says that the ratio is rather high.

Of course, it wouldn't complain if there weren't actual real-life disk-loading problems to work around.

I was pointing this out to the other guy. Who actually had NOTHING to say other than to prove “Everytime I go on Pouet” right. Which is totally fine by me, but I was not talking to him at all, yet he seems to have some strange hard-on on me, and it’s starting to be a bit annoying. He was like “calling the 1541 expansion…. lol”. All with four fullstops, whatever that means in your secret society. So I just wanted to point out that he obviously knows better than Commodore themselves.

Seems like they jumped the shark already. RIP resurrected Commodore 2025-2026.

Commodore just does the Amiga 600 / Amiga 500+ Thing again with this overpriced needless product.

People might look for an FPGA Amiga ( despite the Amiga 1200 MAXI might come out End of 2026 by RetroGames.biz ) . Let´s hope, C= doesn´t take the wrong lane and vanishing again
Someone got a bunch of rejected-trump-phones?

bahh

It feels like they jumped from idea right to product, without validating if there is market for it.

For the "detoxing" effect, that they clearly go for if you look at their promotional video, I either

  • uninstall social apps on the smartphone I already own, and don't use my browser, so spent 0 EUR to get the same, or
  • buy myself a <50 EUR Nokia-like bare-metal phone and put my smartphone away, if I feel like I can't get my phone addiction under control.

Which leaves us with the "buying it for the retro-feeling"-group. But then ~500 EUR for a non-touch phone that "blocks" social media and browsers? What?

I just think the target audience who would buy this is so niche, I can't imagine this being a successful product.

It looks freaking cool though, especially the Starlight edition gives me strong 90s/00s vibes.

My thoughts on the matter:

"Are you keeping up with Commodore? Yeah, maybe you shouldn't, because I get the feeling they are not long for this world. Desperation seeps in as Commodore, the new Perifractic's Commodore if you want to. They are selling something that looks like a Nokia telephone from yesteryear. It looks like a normal you know, those phones we had in the 200s, but it has some social media functions. I don't think anybody wants that. But then again, that's pretty much all they're selling. And I like Commodore, I like to see them revived. But I generally don't have much confidence in their capability of creating a future for a product that is in the past. I really think it's a sad thing to see. But I hope for the best and hope that Commodore.net can rise again. Let's hope they can find some really interesting, not overpriced product one day to sell."

Apart from the highly questionable and arbitrary "detox" stuff they put in (not even a browser is allowed, but it comes with freakin' WhatsApp preinstalled, WTF?), it's impressive just how inconsistent this thing is:
- feature phone look and feel
- smartphone hardware
- smartphone operating system
- feature phone battery (a fraction of the capacity of a smartphone battery!)
- upper mid-range smartphone price
The best verdict I can come up with would be: It's opinionated in all the wrong ways.

I would honestly love this if it was done WELL. Samsung did it with the Galaxy Folder years back, but iirc it was mostly limited to asian markets.

Anyway, this whole company is stupid, I hope it all collapses onto itself and let the brand be dead (for a few years, until the next idiot decides they needs it to nostalgia bait people for cash)

Why? Because you got angry they released a crap product you yourself will never buy? Perhaps no one will ever buy? Wow. That's... Well, IDK exactly what that is... But what's wrong with C64U? With having that option?

Whatever the fate of this C= iteration will be, just hope that they won't turn into trademark/copyright/patent trolls and sue other companies or authors of non-commercial products left and right.
