Browser ports (bis)

I like that one demo with stolen music is now an argument to never care about any intellectual property or in general about caring about anything at all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, there was also countless of (skilled, but still...) pixelarts being "heavily inspired" by uncredited artists.
And a whole range of music editing softwares based on the disassembly of a commercial product.

Not to mention the very origin of crackscene, where one of the motivation was to acquire games without having to pay for :)

On the other hand, I admit that demoscene evolved A LOT since then.

@britelite I was responding to sagacity (but you were quicker). I have seen this demo mentioned now a few times as a defense to just do whatever you want with other peoples demoscene productions.

Another example is samples used in various mods. A good source to look at this is https://modsamplemaster.org/sample-index.php Of course some of these are from sample disks and those are of course fair game, but there were many instances where people just ripped samples from other songs (without giving credits)

Yeah, didn't notice the earlier post and misinterpreted your post. Sorry about targetting you with my rant

If this JS engine would be turned into a emulation layer (maybe with WASM translated demo code, if that's possible) in a way, that the particular demo is being included as binary or in some other less open format, this might both fulfill the idea of transferring demos to modern browsers and the desire to have the creative work artefacts of the involved sceners still protected a bit from full open access.
So you want tech-boys to re-invent emulators? Software that famously already exists.

This is not the point. I use emulators since some C64 emu on a 386 back then, also contributed to CCS64. And I already pointed to the archive.org's DOSBox emulation in the residue'd thread.

Well, I think, it's just about a specific use case: better in-browser "playback" of a demo - plus the way to reach this: using AI for the translation. If the demos wouldn't be translated (and remixed, which also hits games a lot nowadays), but emulated again, just in a better way, the visual result would be the same, but it would annoy less people, I suppose.

why though? We don't _need_ to do this?

Using AI to translate demos is a big waste as already pointed out. Putting efforts to have a browser emulator for the system in question is a much better approach.

As to the why I think we can all agree that youtube for demos is not ideal. Esp older captures is just a blurry mess of compression artifacts and if you don't have adblocker or subscription you have to deal with ads as well.

Yes, a web-based emulator would be a much better way to spend that energy if you really must spend some.

AI enhance youtube so it doesn't noise-fuck your early 90s starfields

yeah, but this would also require actual work, so it's easier to just let AI shit out bad ports lol.

While we are at it: CRT simulation for Youtube please. ;) (includes VGA too)

@okkie:
We also don't need to make demos. ;)

@emoon, fizzer:
Yeah, this sounds like the best investment of ressources if the goal is to be kept. Also any emulation improvement might benefit multiple demos.

Yes, the idea would be for it to work with lots of demos of course. For example for DOS basing it on DOSBox-X. I don't know much about this space, but that is likely on good route.

There is even already a browser version of DOSBox which could be used as a starting point. It's already used by archive.org. If there are fixes required to DOSBox to make certain DOS demos run correctly then they can be contributed back and everyone benefits. There are already in-browser Amiga emulators too.

Am I stating the obvious here?

But those weren’t made by claude so they don’t count…

Sure, sure, but it seems people are implying here that these ports are good thing because 'we need a solution for demos in the browser' which is insane in my opinion. It would be nice if we had good emulators in the browser, but it feels like the AI bros are trying to justify the means by making the ports a must

I'm all for web emulation created by humans that run demos perfectly in the browser, but that's not what this is about.

yeah but how else could you slap your sticker on it?
it's a "look at me, i am so good at AI prompting" exercise... the output is hardly relevant. ironically very in line with AI itself.

I was curious so I had to try. Using https://js-dos.com/overview.html and Robotnik. Works quite well, but the audio has some issues.

I sometimes wonder what the goal is with these ports.

Sticking it to big tech, as a political statement, ripping-and-open-sourceing their cloud-ai-subscription-bloatware, as a statement, I can kinda understand, even using a more evil big tech mechanism with an even worse subscription model.

but what about the authors of these demos? why stick it to them, it does not make any sense to me

I’m pretty sure they want to feel like they’re the man doing the sticking.

nah it's much better to just post the things and leave it mysterious, people can only assume and you can laugh at them if they are right, you'll never hhaha, on top of that, super fun to just let it go to residue, you can say it's because of the others, the luddites, the trolls, the antifa of pouet… vandalising good posts about good technology, made by people who dress well.
