Database Rot

category: general [glöplog]
If this is a sign of things to come I'm afraid pouet will become unusable as a canonical demoscene database.

BB Image

Are we retconning history now? Should we add Windows and all other modern platforms to all dos prods because we have dosbox but also make them all demos because dosbox is over the 4k/64k limit? What even is a dentro? Also the original creators may want to have a say about their prod pages...

Just... ew.

I'd say +1 but +100 seems more appropriate, wtf

Is… is this topic about AI? ;-)

Solicitated or not, these translations of existing demos should be separate releases, not be added to the original ones.

Hmm, wherever the first word came from. :D Anyways, must be separate release, if at all.

Wouldn’t that be basically the same as adding youtube captures as separate releases? :)

I feel these slop ports merit nothing more than a link in the prod comments, if even that.

This is not an AI topic and we already have precedent for doing this without poisoning the database.
Just look at how the windows port for second reality was handled.

I guess a simple rule would be that releases should be frozen to the state they're released at, of course you can add a port, a video or whatever but it shouldn't change the nature of the release and merely be an additional link. If someone were to create a port of a well known release it should indeed be its own release (see second reality or the ST-NICCC releases) - assuming it qualifies (queue AI debate but somewhere else maybe).

There's a difference between a port and a remake. Sure, a remake should be its own release but a port (be that from source code or binary via AI doesn't matter for this discussion, uncle-x this is not a damn AI debate this time) should just be a link on the original prod page.

Yes, handled with some extra link like a YT capture (or remix/remake for that matter) is even better.

+1 .. some extra prod URL with label 'JS port (AI)' the way youtube links are added should make much more sense than adding JS as a platform to ported classics.
Oh my yeah this looks dumb

What the actual fuck. Revert this instantly, and also The link "Online Version" is a complete lie because it's definitely NOT an online version of the original prod, it's a remake.

it's a remake.

And i guess an unsolicited one at that?

That may be a bit of a loaded question with something that's been opensourced as long as the license terms are met... Again, not an AI discussion here.

so this is mrdoob again, yeah?

yes

These ”ports” were slopped up some weeks ago and i actually noticed that ”javascript” thing changed on the prod page late last week but forgot to mention it.

But sure this is not at all about AI.. no sir!

Pretty sure mrdoob doesn't have rights to edit a prod to add another platform or compo. It's a pouet admin/policy issue regardless of where a port/remake comes from.
added on the 2026-11-04 17:22:59 by BoyC BoyC
Yeah i guess everyone can submit changes and then one of the admins/mods accept or decline those.

I’d love to see the audit trail for stuff like this but i also understand why admins mlght not want to share that publicly.

Maybe now that the issue is in the open stuff like this is less likely to happen.

Trying not to say angry things about AI: I believe that if a port or remake is made by someone else than the original prod, it should either be its own prod or an extra link. If it's made by the original creators, it's fine to multi-tag the prod with more platforms.

(This is not well-thought-out. There may be corner cases I have missed.)

completely unrelated to any AI issues, speaking as a decade-long scene database fetishist, i would argue that the platform associated to a prod entry should always be the original one. all ports can be added as dl links, but they do not change the original platform of the prod (the only possible exception that comes to mind is that one artwork demo from the late 1990s where the original concept was to have as many ports as possible).

Probably a bit of an exceptional case, but how about something like Planet Hively? I guess since it's all built from the same source, the rules shouldn't apply here?
I think official ports should be noted as they have been so far. Heaven 7 is a good example for the windows port. The Planet Hively nfo file specifically says System: All, so that neatly fits into this :)

bla bla bla...

1) the frontpage is cached & stuff was already removed while you were bringing up your most excellent "talking points" (read: silly uninformed extrapolations) here
2) if an online version of a prod was made and suggested by the original authors of the prod what even is the fucking problem
3) everyone who demands changes on the bbs but is too lazy to suggest them via the automated edit request system can go sit in the corner next to the kid who's been serially suggesting stupid platform changes in recent weeks (you know who you are)

probably this sounds kinda cranky.. and it should because silly threads like this really take the fun out of working on an archive like this
