Well, usually a person make something and then you ask him/her to go commercial and voila we have an industry..

However, in this case, we are talking about scenemusicians ala not humans, but stupid ignorant whackoos who nobody gives a fuck about..

I'd say crest did the right thing.

In my personal opinion all people using anything that was created by someone else should at least ask for the creators permission, if it is not explicitly allowed by the author to spread around his stuff for free.
I personally dislike Crest and now my clichees about this person have been proven once again.

Ok, this has become a pretty low level Crest bashing. Bashing is ok, as long as there is a high level. Did anyone of you write a mail to Crest?

Now I know why Crest doesn't have a job -- he puts all his effort into making compliation CDs rather than looking for work.

Rumors say he has a job now. see:
"the trip to my first party this year was pretty comfortable and in the train to prague i was listening continously to scene music from my mp3 player."
I wrote a mail to Crest after someone said that he wasn't paying any attention here. We've written a few mails back and forth, and it's straightened out and all good for my part.

If this thread becomes a fairly usable discussion on scene ethics, good. Apart from that, my issue has been resolved and I don't really see the need for a ten page Crest-bashing.

Because he can afford an mp3 player? Apparently he was even able to pay a trip to New Zealand while being unemployed - something most students can't. I guess someone should complain less about Sozialabbau...

Ok, this is the point, where we should stop posting into this thread. he was even able to pay a trip to New Zealand while being unemployed because back than he had "a lot of money" from his (former?) job. He even could spend some prize money for Mekka & Symposium (forgot the year) which he earned at the stock market. And well, in 1996 he was one of the first "normal" people with a mobile phone. But anyway, times have changed, so please stop bashing or at least try to reach some higher level. Anyway, I can go with your last sentence (for some reasons).
i'm with crest on this one. you're all whiners with too much time! go make music instead! release 4867 kickass tracks per year so it doesn't matter if 2 get included on a cd anymore! make *that* your goal, instead of all this ethics crap!

yes of course. If musicians would just stop thinking about ethics, our production rate would rocket sky high like there was no tomorrow :)
well of course not. but stop whining anyway :)

dominei, isn't it more like ' if musicians would just stop beeing on irc, our production rate would rocket sky high like there was no tomorrow :)'? =)

dalezy: or have exams or play silly computer games :)
MM: ok ok.. I will stop.

BUT: People having a mobile phone in 1996 were hardly normal .. ;) Remember, back then there were services that called you on the phone and involved you into "important" discussions so you could show off with your mobile.

sparcus, actually back when i still considered myself a serious musician, some of the files had "disclaimers" going sort of like "if you think you can make money off this, go right ahead, i'm not a prick like the rest".

maybe the fact that i knew noone could ever make money of that shit helped, but anyway it has been and is my view.

i make stuff for *me*, not for others. i'll just got a job if it's money i want, and keep doing scene stuff for fun. my own fun, that is.

i of course can't and don't wish to force others to feel like i do, but whining over 1 measly track on a 5 euro 1000 track cdr sounds, to me, like whining and not like any sort of constructiveness. (but, as lug00ber said, crest and him sorted it out so i'll shut up about this specific case. though you're still all whiners)
