small intros with music

category: general [glöplog]
after I added 15 Seconds by Capanna (a 1KB intro from 1997), and said that it had music, people didn't seem impressed, and mentioned smaller intros with music. Can someone please post some links to such intros? Also, are these intros as old as 15 Seconds? I still find it impressive that it outputs some simple notes on a GUS, considering the year it was made.

Looking on Hornet, that's the only 1k intro I saw with music. But I'm pretty sure there are at least one or two others with music around that size. I'll check when I get home.

God bless Antiq and their annual 1k intro compos! Here are some more with music that I found.

ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/1998/antiq98/1k/dma_scnt.zip

GUS, 220 and 240 versions only. But after comparing them, I found you can just change the left/high value of byte 0x369 to X as in 2X0, and it runs on my GUS at 260 now. Cool.

ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/1999/antiq99/in1k/dma_scn2.zip

Go figure, it's the sequel. This one has a little COM file that will change the GUS port for you :).

If you know where Antiq 2000 releases can be found, there might be more there too. I also have another 1k intro with GUS music called "Twirl", which might have come from Antiq'99, but I can't find it on the net now.

BTW I'd like to see someone try a DirectSound Windows intro in 1k :).

Nice, would be cool to have it in a 4k intro with more instruments :). But when's the next 4k compo?
added on the 2001-08-13 19:10:17 by phoenix phoenix
i dunno.. any party will do.. 4k compo at mekkasymposium would seem best for me, but i hope it will be ready then, i'm working VERY slowly at the moment [slow, but still doing *some* work every few days] .. and more instruments will be added as soon as i decide on the final format of the sequencer :)

This isn't as impressive, but there was a 1994-byte intro by Future Crew that had a very wide distribution back then (placed in archives as a BBS ad). It played a nice short adlib tune, and looked really slick/polished. Amazingly enough, I don't see it in the archives here.

what ritz does has nothing to do with "simple" adlib tune, he generates the sounds like in JIZZ which far more powerful since you can get CD quality tunes at very low cost os space which such a technique
added on the 2001-08-17 11:30:55 by p01 p01
the technique is called a softsyn(th). this doesn't really belong here but check exodus by foobug (64k intro) and listen to the music, it's all generated (yeahyeah blahblah fr-08 blahblah) ;)

oh, and btw.. jizz (and stash) are different.. they have pregenerated samples, while 'fr-08' and 'meuk' and 'void3' and '4k-1' are realtime generated [this is possible due to coprocessor stuff] [and i'm not quite sure about 4k-1 because i never spoke to the ppl who made it, but it sure sounds like a realtime softsynth] [how else would fr-08 be playing the elevator tune DURING the precalcing process :) ]
added on the 2001-08-17 20:53:18 by ritz ritz
(offtopic) they should've based the precalc time on the elevator tune, not on how long it took to precalc. the elevator tune r0x!

The length of the elevator tune (slightly more than 4 minutes) was based on what chaos feared the precalc time would be.

Luckily it turned out to be a TAD less :)))

(a bit offtopic) what's needed to enable the ADLIB on a SB card?
added on the 2001-08-29 16:54:52 by p01 p01
(more offtopic) You can't enable the ADLIB on an SB. An Adlib is a completely different card. But when people talk about adlib music, they tend to mean FM music, and there is an OPL2 or OPL3 on SB cards (the chip used to generate FM sounds).

(more and more offtopic) so is there a chance that I hear some sound from 256b intros on my PC someday ? and how ?

thanks in advance

(closer to topic) mandelbrot is possible has adlib music, but you have to watch it for a while first. And turn it up loud.

Dunno if that's what you wanted, though.

This used to be in my signature.

Code: #include <math.h> /* outputs 8 kHz 8-bit unsigned pcm to stdout */ main(v,i,z,n,u,t){for(v=-1;;)for(n=pow(/* gcc -lm sig.c;./a.out>/dev/dsp */ 1.06,"`cW`g[`cgcg[eYcb^bV^eW^be^bVecb^"[++v&31]+(v&64)/21),i=999;i;putchar( 128+((8191&u)>i?0:i/8)-((8191&(z+=n))*i-->>16)))u+=v&1?t/2:(t=v&6?t:n/4);}

And yes, there are smaller players in some of my vic-20 demos (e.g. the first part in impossiblator 2)
viznut: sick :D
