What about using a free, real men OS?

Give Linux a serious multimedia api where

  • serious != it works
  • serious != breaks backward compatibility
  • serious != ... every 4 months

and something might appear. Even a stable SDL shared lib would do the job. But for god sake keep it backwards compatible at least on a distro base... so one could at least say "it works on (almost) every ubuntu breeze and later". Oh, and did someone mention drivers yet? Really? =)

I don't hate Linux. But I like exploiting an operating system, not updating it.

blala, you said:

only 2 days of using linux gives me the amount of stress/headache i get in a year while using windows.

Apparently I misunderstood you. In any case, I get exactly the opposite effects: The moment I have to use a windows computer I feel handicapped. It's a matter of taste, obviously.

However, I would really like to hear what that terrible problem was that was the fault of the system and caused you so much grief. I am really curious.

makc: It's strange that you mention SDL, since that particular API has been stable since practically forever... As for drivers, the only thing that does not work out of the box is the proprietary ATI and NVIDIA drivers.

and remember kids..ubuntu is linux for schoolgirls!
Schoolgirls are cool...
maali: for CS firstyears too it seems... that's why i suppose it to be fairly consistent troughout installations btw

mot: i mentioned SDL exactly for that reason, as a possible common base. still i had problems with more than one SDL program on more than a distro.
having a public is part of the game afterall... the other part is ease of development, where I personally choose Win for so many reasons (kusma and smash detailed most of them quite well earlier iirc)

does SDL segfault when switching to fullscreen on windows?

i mean:
does SDL _STILL_ segfault when switching to fullscreen on windows?

garg: that was probably fixed between 1.2.3.7.37 and 1.2.3.7.58, but you must have OSS 3.5.2.4 and not 3.5.2.5 otherwise it will print the screen instead

Actually, you could use VICE as a multiplatform multimedia API. It runs on Linux, Windows, BeOS, Amiga, MacOS, and even RISC OS. The added bonus being that your demo might even work on a Commodore 64 as well!

Static linking does wonders as well. Many Linux demos seem to depend on having some ancient lib being installed as shared and are failing because of that 3 years later. The existing commercial Linux games OTOH still manage to run pretty well even when they were released during the 90s.

yeah. Small trivia, dedicated to moT (because he asked):
- older versions of which library were removed from the latest Debian (and thus from Ubuntu as well) distro (so non-opensource softs do not work anymore, unless you are an apt-get magician _and_ know the trivia)?
- you couldn't guess it Sir! Tadadada! It's the c runtime!!!

Now, after have downloaded whole three Linux distro's I'm already in love with them!!!11

These distros are just beutiful:
Archie (LiveCD), phlak (LiveCD, but can be installed with the LiveCD) and Gentoo..

Though Linux is not the best OS to run/create demos on though..
