I swear it was one of those newfangled linux desktops, this or the Novell stuff. In either case: any system that spends time/effort to make errors to look shiny clearly is expecting it's users to experience it a lot :(

Well, here I am sitting at a nice newly installed RH fedora box, configuring apache and installing updates. And clicking on an OK button every 2 minutes because there's no damn 'yes to all' button on the updater, and looking for config files because the gui apache config maker broke my config. And wishing it was OSX where i wouldn't have all these shitty issues, and where I'd have a proper GUI too. Even windows is better for general stuff.. think I'll stick to netbsd without GUI for serving in future.

Try something a little better than Fedora then. All distros are not alike, not even near. IMO Fedora isn't among the best choices, it's not really stable or polished. Seems like just something for RH to base their future development on and not anything to be used. (not that I'm really very fond of stable RH distros either)

Try something like Ubuntu on for size if you're looking for a good desktop experience. And yeah, you should probably stick to a distro intended for serving in the future if you are going to use it for serving. Fedora *really* isn't very well suited to that.

Yeah, was after something i could run some php/mysql stuff on and also use for browsing the web etc. Redhat was about the best distro last time i used it.. but that was about 6-7 years ago. Tried ubuntu a short while back, and didn't really like that either. Probably i've just been spoiled with osx.

Then again, "better" is such a subjective term. Some people think that Lindows is better and I think we can both agree that it, in our own minds, is utter horseshit.

The only thing Linux seriously taught me was that ignorance can be bliss. At least OSX doesn't confuse their typically harebrained userbase with a kazillion different "oh, but (x) is better, lol" arguments.

Depends on really what it is that it's meant to be used for. Linspire actually has some good points for desktop users from what I could see when I tried it. Nice little tutorial videos for beginners, pretty well set up for basic home use and an easy way to install software if you're willing to pay for it.

But if you're going to blabber about how Linux performs badly on the desktop, please don't install a cutting-edge testing distribution that serves as a template for a commercial server/enterprise version. That's *bound* not to give you the best possible desktop or reliability experience.

That's about as bad a choice as you can make for *either* one of those. Linux servers are seldom administered thru a GUI and they're usually expected to be stable.

I did give a recommendation for an easy to use desktop distro.

OS X isn't such a dream OS either. Nothing's perfect but I honestly don't see Ubuntu faring that bad against it.

xandros is the perfect noob-friendly desktop linux distro.

but it's for corporate and teacher people, not real men ;)

He did suggest Ubuntu as a better desktop distro. I'd agree too; I've just gone to Ubuntu after running Gentoo for a long time.

I'd still rather use Windows or OSX as a primary OS though.

XGL is "the novell stuff". Yes, it has some totally pointless features that it would be better without, but it has a lot of features that are in Os X desktop and in the Windows Vista desktop and some more and it will be good (maybe not yet).

Don't get me wrong though. I still think Linux pretty much sucks as a desktop OS, I prefer Windows for what I like to use my computer for.
