What demos to use in a talk about demoscene history?

The demoscene is s cultural phenomenon, not a technical one.

"Is", maybe, but it was primarly a technical one.
And since SvOlli asked for suggestions regarding the history, the "technical phenomenon" is definetly relevant. Also, the rivalry between the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST had its impact on the demoscene in the late eighties as well. So maybe showing an intro or a demo on the Atari ST from that era is not too far off either.

No it wasn't. The artifacts that the demoscene produces, are highly technical. But the demoscene is a group of people, not machines or software. A technical phenomenon would be something that you could analyze with an oscilloscope, debugger, or microscope.

Maybe for Spectrum demos Refresh would be better for cultural impact (502 references at zxpress.ru as opposed to 169 for Weed and 0 for Your Song is Quiet pt.2).
no history talks without "Second Reality"! it's like talk about history of music ignoring Bach and the Beatles.
"Smoke Bomb" by Ozone was a good idea. I also recommend "MoralHardCandy" by Blasphemy.

Don't forget this hardware presentation that had enormous impact on the demoscene.
IMHO the impact of crack scene on the demoscene is overestimated.

Are the first demos for ZX Spectrum such as Spectrum Demonstration (1982) or DLAN Demo (1983) related to crack scene somehow? Where the word "demo" itself came from?

Japanese one from 1983, and from 1985 (follow the links, there are more).
@alonecoder: Wow, great finds!!

@Alone_Coder: What makes you so sure that the word "demo" in the scene sense originated from this kind of sales demo? It seems unlikely to me: early demosceners were not trying to persuade people to buy their brand of computer.

(I can think of a bunch of equally plausible theories: maybe it came from the idea of a "demo tape" in the music industry, which a band uses to promote themselves. Or maybe the early demosceners saw game demos on the front of magazines, and decided that a "demo" was a game minus the game. Until we find some real evidence, these are just guesses.)

Speaking about the word "demo", the whole demoscene nomenclature is kind of bothersome and misleading as hell: "party", "demo", "intro", "4k", "plasma", etc. I wish we had better, more self-explainatory and more unique terms for all of that.

Oh, and still no joke about all-time classics, such as Sauli's Penis and Rush Hour. Those would certainly make an impression in a scene talk. ;)

you cant afford to miss mentioning CNET - right after crack intros of course. (some say CNET coined the "demo" term)

Haha, 4k was alright, till they used the same term for resolution. We were the first bitch!

It was even better when Astra announced that they would be launching a "4k demo channel". :D
