YouTube now supports 60fps!!!

category: general [glöplog]
I uploaded a 50fps ZX Spectrum video yesterday.
It works but is imperfect: 50fps is only available in HD (when opened in non-HD mode it drops half of the frames).
Chrome plays it happily enough, but Firefox does not make this option available.

60fps videos are glorious... but totally forgot that 60fps was a shitty flickery mess on CRTs back in the day.

Depends on what kind of CRT you use.
The amount of perceived flicker is dependent on the amount of afterglow from the phosporous coating on the screen.
If a screen was designed for 60 Hz, then it will have a long afterglow, which means little perceived flicker (but possibly more ghosting).
If you have a screen that was designed to handle eg 120 Hz, then yes, at 60 Hz it will flicker badly.

50fps - that's the most awesome things!
Where is your Spectrum video link?

Also, VGA 70hz, interpolated to 60 ok, but no 70fps video possible?
Those VGA geeks had it 10-20fps harder, than all others.

Also, the second reality interpolation, does it spoil fluidness or not? I was having the HD of oldschool demos and for some times I wasn't sure I was 60 or 30 (but visible if you switch) as much as when watching Skyrim or something.

Also, 50fps c64 video, jumpy. But that's becuase of emulator. Imagine watching it the same way as in the past. I miss those superfluid scrollers, even need a CRT monitor to fully feel it.

Here is a test with an Amiga demo : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1V2QV-p8OU
It's better than before, when it was only 30fps, but still not perfect.

Are you watching it in a 50hz screenmode, or something else? ;)

Here's a go at it, the NTSC version of Overdrive by TITAN:

LMS by TiTAN now has a fancy shmancy 60fps yt capture too (even with DSR).

@Optimus, this is a 50Hz capture of one of my old demos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOZNUP1kK9g. It is a good example because it uses something we call "gigascreen" on spectrum, i.e. 25Hz screen updating to mix the colours. The video still does not look perfect because it loses sync every one in a while, which it should not really do. Also, it looks better on a 60Hz monitor than on a 50Hz monitor, which does not make too much sense. However, it is still a marked improvement compared to 25Hz we had to use in the past.

Yes, I see some static images, and sometimes flip to another frame of the second image. It's supposed to show both images flipping here to produce more colors? That's strange.

now that we have g-sync (and free-sync in development), maybe we would be able to have a proper 50Hz on our monitors in a near future?

Dunno, my crappy Samsung monitor already exposes 50 Hz modes. Works like a charm for WinVice or WinUAE :)

@Scali:
great point. my dell works great with amiga directly (ips dells works with odd frequencies), but doesn't expose anything other than 60Hz to OS X (and pulldown is actually disabled in the display preferences pane). Maybe a multi-monitor problem?
I'll need to dig more to see if I can enable 50Hz easily, cause it really sucks to work on single frame 50Hz effects while watching them on 60Hz.

btw, have you tried watching a introspec's youtube 50Hz video on your 50Hz samsung? does it have a problem like they described above or it work nicely? (e.g. you see the same amount of even and odd frames)

The best should be to watch the 50p videos on a smartphone or tab. I tested them a fex months ago and iOS devices gives the best results for 50p videos... unfortunately Youtube does not support 50/60p for mobile devices yet.
i couldn't pin any difference in introspec's video. 50 or 60 refresh. flicker pixels everywhere. and it's upscaled. the pixel colors even interpolated. it's lossy. i'd not measure the effectiveness of that. not worth my time.

@Optimus, if you'd watch this demo on a real Spectrum attached to a 50Hz TV, you'd only see a significant flicker on straight lines (because this is where the difference in luminosity is the largest). The flicker on shaded rectangles should be sometimes invisible, sometimes barely visible.

@yumeji, "flicker pixels everywhere" = does not work properly, which was my point in the first place.

On LCDs or whatever these flatscreens are, even if with vsync-locked full framerate, motion is not as clear as on CRTs. That's why they're trying all these black frame insertion things, to reduce blurriness. In oldskool demos, if you watch them like they should, on a CRT, you can see each individual pixel in a fast-moving scroller, but if you send the same signal to an LCD, even full vsync locked framerate, you cannot see the details because of the blur. You will understand if you watch the stuff properly, on proper hardware. So far all this Youtube crap is just crap, if you watch it with modern displays.

i prebuffered but... flawless delivery. 60 fps and still streaming nicely on 2mbit. dunno where they crammed that bandwidth and coding.

BTW, This 60fps youtube stuff works very very well on my 4 years old mac on safari 8.0 (yosemite) in fullscreen, no frame drops, very smooth :)
I don't know why but on the same computer (4 years old mac) on chrome, I have some frame drops. And on my work computer (Linux) I have a lot of frame drops, most of the time it's not at 60hz...
@PauloFalcao i guess you gotta blame the video decoder implementations or something in that OSs not getting the shit done. or bitrate spikes that stuff can't get done. just ran that titan's lms with mere 4 drops. rerun of the timeless just none. ofc all decoding partially in hardware. and chrome on windows.

Smooth playback (of LMS) here on Lin+Chromium+i5, with Flash enabled or disabled. Go figure.
