- Envy of the microw8 sound capabilities! The RGB coder colors kinda ugly tho, a byte or two to set better palette would've been nice. Isn't the palette in microw8 already a great one, so it should be matter of selecting the right portion of it? Anyway, massive thumb for the music, can't say no to untz.

- I get why people are complaining about recycled content, but it has music and scene transitions synced to music so here's the thumb to all people putting music in their tiny intros :)

- 4k Windows Photons Are All We See by Altair
- + The effect is nice; it's nice to see other things than vanilla raymarching (ok, I think it's a sort of raymarching but from the particle sources point of view). And music has its moments. - Camera shake is too buzy / feels too obvious noise function. I guess it's difficult to replicate the noise properties of human hand :)

- 4k Windows A study of glass II by mrange & Virgill [web]
- + Great glass and the objects were very satisfying to look at. The piano synthesis is also very nice! - For the chill track, the scenes could have lasted slightly longer & objects move slightly slower; felt a bit hurried.

- 4k Windows Physics Girl St. by Team210 [web]
- The glow is great; looks a bit like subsurface scattering and music sounds nice! But more progression / surprises would help keeping the interest of the audience all the way to the end.

- 4k Linux | by epoqe [web]
- This is very unsettling which is of course great how it manages to evoke such a nasty feeling. In a bad trip type of way. A few nits: there is some edge next to the Alcatraz logo, and the periodic ~ sinewave texture in some of the structures breaks the immersion and highlights that this is CGI. Also, the kick is perhaps a bit too unz for the style? But disregarding small nits, one of the most immersive 4ks for a long period time, thank you for this!

- 1k JavaScript EXPI by Ribbon [web] & Brainlez Coders!
- Quote:
The 1k is the most strange beast. I never understood it - how much harder is it to make content than 4k? and how much more easy than 256 ?
In any case this was clearly the winner.
It got a bit easier when browsers started to accept Brotli compressed html page as it is. So, there's no need anymore for abusing polyglot PNGs to get DEFLATE compressed javascript code. This saves maybe 160 bytes stub and Brotli is slightly better algorithm than DEFLATE.
That said, 1ks still require different approaches than 4ks. For example, 4ks can fit midi note data for the entire song, composed using a VST host. But for 1ks, even with free compression, that is too much. The whole song needs to be composed more like bytebeat, trying to find code that produces passable music without using too much bytes. In Expi, all instrument channels are looping a simple 8 note pattern of notes: you can hear it easiest in the bassline. But higher channels are playing the same pattern octaves up, yet with slower notes.
Quote:It's cool, but the live site flashes 100% orange in Firefox repeatedly. It doesn't flash in Edge so I assume this isn't intentional.
That's why the disclaimer in NFO: "prefer Chrome or Edge." The flashes are because the glitch effect is done by grabbing a compressed JPG of the screen, randomly setting bytes of the stream to 0s and then setting it as the background. Obviously, Firefox jpg decoder is not as happy about that as the decoder in Chrome/Edge. - isokadded on the 2023-08-08 08:32:23
