- This was really an "Assembly demo" if you know what I mean. Lots of tricks from the ASD playbook but with nerdy synthwave influences. I like it!
The demo ran pretty well on GTX 1060 but there were some sudden FPS drops at times. I remember that in some talk, Navis made the point that effects should be faded in an out smoothly to avoid such jumps. Maybe it's unfair to nitpick about this in a compo with two Notch demos though :)
I laughed in the Kinect scene because depth map smoothing makes it looks like the coder was wearing a whole body skinsuit. - rulezadded on the 2020-04-17 20:23:08

- It's like those "engine" demos of yore :) Good pacing, pretty scenes, and energetic music. I think every Unreal Engine demo should have a spinning donut.

- Thanks for the kind words yzi.
The Strasbourg Cathderal made an impression on me and I wanted to convey some of that feeling in the facade shots in this demo. The obsession with details in Gothic architecture makes it an awesome sight since it has structure on vastly different scales. I recently read Camillo Sitte's City Planning According to Artistic Principles which allowed me to appreciate how well the view of the cathedral is managed. You first see the clock tower far away, but the full view is obscured until you finally arrive at an alley leading to the plaza. From that vantage point the facade of the Cathedral is essentially flat, so it looks more like an engraving than a church. It's beautiful. As you make your way closer, it strikes you that this building is absolutely massive and it's hard to even fathom its scale once you're standing right next to it.
The Mandelbox is a great candidate for bringing a similar structure to life, but it needs enough detail for the visual effect to appear. I tried to make the picture quality as smooth as possible so that high-frequency details can be appreciated.
Thanks to other commenters as well. Sometimes a demo writes itself but this wasn't one of those. - isokadded on the 2020-04-15 01:59:57

- It's genius how parts of spinning models were sawed off in screen space.

- Watched this again now. I like how you put a little story in there. The claw vending machine scene was very realistic. I also found the C64 effect amusing with its suddenly appearing 200 perfectly simulated balls. Intended or not, it had perfect comedy timing. :)
