- demo Windows XO NOX by Altair
- very good! the opening part is really nice, great soundtrack and cool idea with the "projection/structured light".
perhaps some parts were a bit too simplistic & empty (some models/textures/lighting were a bit basic), and a few things seemed like random demo content rather than something made to fit (the wires). but a very good demo! - isokadded on the 2018-09-03 12:26:47

- demo Windows block one by Fairlight [web] & Cocoon [web]
- i can't really take any credit for this - NTSC used Notch (the tool developed by myself and destop which is now released, www.notch.one) and did all the work himself.
and he did a fantastic job. :) - isokadded on the 2018-04-03 15:56:00

- 10 years ago id have been bothered by the comments on this demo, now i find the polarisation an amusing achievement in itself! this demo is clearly not to everybody's taste (and is not intended to be). being middle of the road sucks anyway. :)
that said, personally i try to vote objectively on demos and only thumb down things which are objectively really bad, and i try to normalise my vote. in these days of relatively few actual good demos released, seeing any thumbs down on any decent demo really grates on me.
if you're thumbing down this demo, or any demo which objectively clearly demonstrates quality in terms of audio (even if you dont like it), graphics, design (even if you dont like it), rendering quality, effects.. if you're really saying that this demo, objectively in terms of overall quality of work, really is in the bottom third, or less, of every production released this year.. well, i call bullshit. maybe you're acting as an angry consumer annoyed that they went to the theatre expecting to see a summer blockbuster and wandered into an indie movie by mistake and wants their 10$ back (except this is the scene, there was no 10$ and there's not supposed to be any consumers either..), or maybe you dont know enough to be objective about what you're watching, or maybe you don't have the respect for demos and their creators that i (and many others here) have while voting.
re the stalling issue: it's not because of shader compilation (believe me, you'd be waiting minutes between scenes..) - it's due to the rather large amount of VRAM usage and allocation between scenes, unfortunately. - isokadded on the 2017-08-13 13:35:18
- demo Windows Soundproof Motion by Fairlight [web] & Logicoma [web]
- the hoff is right.
i was totally planning to show up to nova without releasing anything, then started sketching a day or so before the party and things started happening, and thought it would be nice to support the party with a demo, soo... i showed up at nova and bugged him into lending me a track - and it fit perfectly, so i quickly put it together. (and the ukscene allstars one. thats another story.)
thanks a lot to ferris and hoffman for letting me use it and going so far as disqualifying themselves from the compo they were actually supposed to enter. i didnt realise they were going to do that - in the olden days releasing demo soundtracks in the music compo was acceptable.. :) - isokadded on the 2017-06-27 14:00:33
- 64k Windows Elysian by Logicoma [web]
- great soundtrack (for 64k especially), very nice well-designed visuals.
some pretty heavy gmunk inspiration spotted :) - rulezadded on the 2016-10-25 00:10:10
- demo invitation Windows Rise and Shine by Aberration Creations & Logicoma [web]
- very pretty - but very static (and very baked). the same visual quality but dynamic would have really been something.

- 64k Windows fermi paradox by Mercury [web]
- very good! good direction and camerawork and some nice use of effects - i like the fluid / turbulence thing on the gas giant.
but (oh dear.. here it comes): in my humble view, it doesn't have the magic and mystery needed to make it great.
the first issue is that it's really slow paced - like galactically slow. that's a fine way to make things look epic, particularly on the big screen, but it also leaves nowhere for anything to hide. watching the exe at home it left my mind free to wander - and to start mentally dissecting all the individual scenes while watching them.
and the scenes were too easy to dissect. on each scene i couldn't help but think "ok, so this is just this generator and that generator", "blob particles rendered into a texture for the crators?", "heightmap landscape", "i know that water simulation..", "those lens flare sprites look like a circle with a blob subtracted from it", "i wonder if it's this atmospheric paper or that one", etc.
that's probably a lot to do with the theme (which is to be fair something i'm not a fan of - i didn't really care for beyond either). you're essentially talking about a lot of spheres - no great mystery with those - and a lot of natural effects: landscapes, water, the lighting & atmosphere rendering etc. they're all things that are quite well understood, and lend themselves to very well to generation and realtime rendering - which makes it hard to find the "mystery".
so there's the problem for me. what you have here is a 64k with a lot of different elements, where every element is really really well implemented, but none of them alone seemed new; and it's put together really well but it still added up at most to the sum of its parts, not more.
the conspiracy intro is the perfect foil to this one. it's much lower tech, there's fewer different elements in it, it's technically much simpler - but it adds up to way much more. it keeps your mind moving and focused and leaves you wondering how it was done. even if the answer was "its all fake", you still have to think about it for a bit. :)
note that what i'm complaining about here is the difference between being a really good 64k vs being the greatest ever 64k, not being a good or a bad 64k. clearly this is a really impressive 64k with a ton of great work in it, everything is done very well and put together very well. to the point where complaining about anything is kindof ridiculous. sorry. :) - rulezadded on the 2016-04-02 15:30:13
