Unfortunately that is not the case, as in the real world loading even from the divMMC is far from instantaneous. And they are carefully taken into account in this demo.
Yeah.. fair point. "Insta-load" is an exaggeration on my part but loading is fast enough that the flow is not broken if it's handled well, like it is here.
Is there a practical limit of file size? Or a compo rule or even some sort of gentlemen's agreement to stay below half a meg? I'm against this technique, though I never say never and I'm also interested to see how far it can be taken. - isokadded on the 2025-04-16 16:48:47

- "ZX SPECTRUM WITH DIVMMC INTERFACE OR EMULATOR RECOMMENDED FOR FULL IMMERSION"
There's some great stuff in here, but I'm not a fan of the trend towards relying on emulators or requiring you to add a very modern "magic insta-load" device to your retro computer to watch a demo.
"The demo is almost half a mega, and uses divMMC. Would I be wrong to guess it's mostly animation then?"
No.. there's clever stuff going on here, but it could just as easily be animation. And, no, I don't mean streaming whole frames - no-one is suggesting it goes that far. But there's a whole lot of room between "pure animation" and "pure code". The kind of highly optimized renderer that chews through data prepared offline (think: 3D flyby renderer where the tris have already been through T&L, clipping, etc.) will do well on this platform because you can dedicate your whole RAM to a few seconds of screen time if you like - those pesky loading times between scenes are no longer an issue.
I wonder how many of the audience understand what's happening here, that this isn't the Spectrum setup you remember from the early 80s? I guess it might also be the case that many do know and don't care - which is fair enough :D
So maybe I'm just the old man shouting at clouds and this is the only way that the Speccy scene has left to evolve? Or is this the "Does the Spectrum scene need to be divided" discussion all over again?
Anyway.... I still gotta thumb this up! - rulezadded on the 2025-04-16 15:07:37

- Didn't expect to see something of this quality in the compo. Really nice lighting, colors, cameras and attention to detail - even the small file size is nice.

- It's taken me 13 years to realise that the music has a strong "4 14" vibe to it. But I guess it make cosmic sense that the music is possibly a homage to a song from an album whose titles are all numbers..
