• FYI: There have ALWAYS been machines on the handheld market that were/are superior to the nintendo consoles.
  
  The gb/gbc/gba was never top-notch technically. The answer to your question is a) a lot of gained third-party developers, b) low power consumption (very important when it somes to mobile gaming) and c) marketing.
  
  And once nintendo got the quasi-monopoly, they could defend it easily with backwards compatibility etc. The situation might change in the future though.
