- demo BK-0010/11M Good Apple (Bad Apple remix) by SandS [web]
- Quote:As I said before, the size of binary files is about 53 Mb. The rest space left free to allow people to use this HDD image with their own purpose (add other demos and games, for instance), because it's not quite easy to copy data from one HDD to another on this platform (actually, there is no any operating system that support 2 HDD simultaneously). The previous attempt to implement "Bad Apple" on this platform ended up with 78 Mb HDD image. So, please, read my comment above.
131 MB? WTF. srsly.

- Hi, trixter! First of all, I respect your "8088 Domination" a lot, the things you did are very impressive and inspiring! Unfortunately, I forgot to mention you in greetings (with no evil intent), sorry! Also, thank you for your interest in our demo.
Well, FAQ time :)
- This computer has no DMA. We have to read all data "manually" from HDD registers, word by word. As well as switch heads, cylinders and sectors on fly.
- This computer is very slow, it spends up to 72 CPU cycles to move a number from one memory cell to another. And it runs on 4 MHz only.
- Considering these facts, we are not able to simply stream 16 kb of screen data 30 times per second. So we developed a special codec.
- We store only difference between frames. Most of time our codec is lossless, but on dynamic scenes we have to drop some words, according to their unimportance. When the bandwidth is not filled by current frame's data, we load a part of the upcoming keyframe. Sometimes we switch screen pages to display a preloaded keyframe.
- We switch palettes often, since this computer can only display black + 3 colors (a few awful presets) at time.
- Packed size of .hdi file is 45 Mb, that means it filled by zeros mostly. We want to leave some free space that people can use to store their games, demos and other soft. It's HDD image, after all. The pure data size is 53762 Kb. 9662 of it is occupied by music (stereo 8 bit).
- Let's calculate: about 6500 frames, 16 kb each. 104000 Kb in total. We store 44100 Kb of packed video. The compression ratio is 2,36.
- I wonder how you fit everything into 20 Mb! What is your secret? ;)

- Nice star transition and cool water scene. Not sure these scenes match well with retro parts, but anyway - good demo.

- It sounds like 64k intro! Ingenious!
The visuals are quite boring, though. I suppose the space that was wasted to the floor texture (which nobody noticed) could be spend more efficiently (to store one more object, may be?)
Anyway, the intro is cool! - rulezadded on the 2018-08-19 07:15:24
