A bit Kasparovish, but with more details and variety, with very acceptable realistic scenes. I specially like de final scene, with the hanging bird.

it flickers alot in fullscreen mode on my windows xp, but i saw it in windowed mode.
good graphics and music, but it's too game-like imho.

Some very nice modelling, and the music is cool, but single 3d world demos with camera changes every 4 beats are going to get tiring after a while. But as it usually goes, I admire the work and the details they put into it. Wish it had a little more of a storyline or object movement or in-between 2d effects/pics or something.

For those who have fullscreen problems, change your page-flipping mode under OpenGL Settings to Block Transfer (mentioned in the info).

it flickers in fullscreen on my w2k, too. and in windowed i got a huge bunch of gfx distortion, making it almost impossible to view. i never saw the scene on the shot :(

About flickering : Make sure page flipping is set to block transfer (as mentioned in the txt-file), that worked for me.

i'm so disapointed... i really used to love kolor productions since 1996 but this one is just booooring... although there's some great modelling and nice texture work, it's just some sort of "kasparov at the country"... please guys, focus back on to design and leave that 3ds max a bit alone ;)

The demo in general and the music in particular have a Kasparovish wanabee feel. Hm. Not quite. Long, boring, pointless and not particularly nice to look at. That would make it average, but the white flashes and annoying filmscratch overlay guarantee this one will NEVER be run again on my computer.

What's wrong with the Dialogos01 results?!?!?

i liked the mood of it, and the scenes are nice, but then again, just another 3D replayer with no sense or meaning. It doesn't suck, and notes a lot of work in it, but just doesn't meet my expectations as a demo, so, no thumbs up either. Nice to watch, but i don't think i'll watch it again on my computer

It is indeed just a 3D fly-by. And it's rather long. Can't say I was bored, but then again, I only watched it once. I give it a thumbs up because of the very crisp, very detailed objects and textures, the attention to details, and the coherence of graphics, music and code. It's true it has a very good atmosphere. And the film scratch/flash effects add alot to that too.

once again a kolor demo with a literature background.. maybe we should read that poem by georg trakl fella to fully understand its meaning?.. now I see great 3d and textures and some atmosphere indeed.. but not much sense or real feeling about it..

back after a little background-tracking work..
Georg Trakl, it appears, is a quite well-known german poet, surrealist dedicated to portraying the horrors of WWI which he witnessed while working as a field medic.. the english translation of 'de profundis' can be found here . I can't say if its 100% accurate, but it really makes pretty much sense when it comes to understanding the canvas of this demo. the fields emptied by war, the ravens, the grey skies, the spider on the wall, the angelic choir present in the music track.. even the 'old-film' effects, which seemed annoying before, now work for the stylization.
to sum it up, now I can safely 'thumb-up' this one. and I definitely want more demos that require some work to fully understand them (like good books or movies).

Sorry.
Although it is the completed demo, I didn't seldom like the demo.
This demo is visible to the second episode of "Kasparov".
And it is a little boring.;)
However code, gfx and music was good.:)

People comparing this to Kasparov should be shot (or at least looked at angrily). While it may be 'just another scene replayer' the fact that it actually MEANS something is something I respect.

We have enough demos with shallow and empty flashy colours as it is.

Yes,. it may become boring after a while. Not a demo I would watch several times, but I wanted to vote it just for the sake of the wireframe ;)

FYI: a patch pack for this demo (or the full final) can be downloaded at http://www.kaoz.org/kolor/releasedetails.php?ReleaseID=25
it fixes the screen flickering bug some people are complaining about and is a bit faster in general.

Crappy 'old-cinema' effect and boring as hell with a rather awful sky texture.. Has nice music and the wooden bird-thing in the end is also pretty cool...

and, i forgot:
next time we`ll have to add a REAL story.
real story means: very complicated logic, thrill, aliens, violence, drugs and cool people doing cool things.
all this can be expressed as a linear transformation from soap-opera to nerd-space.
we`ll have to check our dimension i think.

Shorter, slower, less texures, less effects, less detail and less atmosphere than Kasparov.

The fact is, it has all been done before, and done better.

I'm not saying it's a bad demo, but it breaks no new ground.
added on the 2001-11-28 23:05:54 by Wade^Hjb Wade^Hjb
difference to kasparov is that it makes sense and kasparov does not.

kasparov is simply childish and its statement is irrelevant ( insetcs are dangerous ? other planets are mysterious or what ? )

and about detail: adding another piepeline with cylindrical mapping is not "detail".
in kasparov there is not a single object with nontrivial mapping.

and kasparov being ik, flocking or having advanced lighting is not true. technically its vertexcolor shadows from 3rd-party programms and all the rest is morphtracks. at least it could have been expressed as that.
added on the 2001-11-29 11:25:07 by noize noize
My apologies. It seems I had been watching the demo without textures. They make a big difference. Fantastic artwork I must say, it's just a shame about the speed of the demo.

As for Kasparov; the statement it makes, I gather, is more to do with oppression and control, the artificial reproduction of nature, and the future of this planet.

Personally, I didn't find anything profound about De Profundis. But it has a Latin title, so that should be enough to fool most sceners. :)

added on the 2001-11-29 20:42:42 by Wade^Hjb Wade^Hjb
we can not reproduce why it runs slow.
if it runs slow it is due to compatibility issues and definately not beacuse the use of hw-acc is inefficient.

and about the title being latin: its misleading, i must confess. but we simply could not resist it: i first learned the poem yeras ago and forgot about it thereafter. then we made the demo. and than we found out how much it is influenced by this poem. its not made FOR the poem - the itself poem made the demo, and i didnt even see it until it was done.

why do you excuse for such a beautiful prod?
i like the scenes, which differ from usual 3d industrial/girls/techno crap.
the demo is done in an excellent style, and the music fits perfectly. great work :)

(btw at my early comment my drivers were bugged, now everything is smooth and fine:)

nice in a cinematic way. maybe a bit boring and the textures were quite plain but the visuals cover it and all in all it's a good demo.
rulez added on the 2001-12-30 10:31:30 by funktion funktion
humm, i have the chance to see it with no textures :/ all in shade of colors and cartoon mode + phong objects, it's looks not very bad in this mode (due to my bad video card or is it bad coding ? :] )

so, in normal mode now, with textures : ah, it's looks different :] textures are in 8bits for me, and the rendering looks good
it's a death ambience in fact, but i dont understand the message
and the screen wich moves all the time and these bad dust on the screen hurts my eyes
yet, the 3D-models are very complex and good but the music is perhaps too much medium in front of the rest, and the code needs a very expensive computer to be soft/speed/fast
so i cant give a thumbs up
maybe the most beautiful demo I ever saw. great photography, colors, modeling.
And I love the sky.
And the sunflowers.
too bad it doesn't move ;)

about the speed / texturing problems: the problem with code nowadays is that, if you want to be innovative, you will have to go to new hardware. therefore, i will not code demos that run on old pcs or ancient gpus. demo code should be interresting to write, if i want to do 100% compatible stuff.. well i do that at work :). The downside is that very few people (even few coders) will actually notice a difference what is hard/easy to do on hw acc. it's much easier for people to see "wow they can do 3d in 4k!", or in the old days "wow a texture mapped poly!" than to see "wow, 100k faces at full framerate on a mx". (sidenote: was there ANY pixelshader tech demo in the scene ever?) actually i was thinking about req. a gef3 for my next demo. it's more fun to code and it would be fresh stuff. one can inovate in code, but not if one wants it to run on not so uptodate hw. no wonder scene demos will fail to astounish technically in comparison to some nvidia techdemo, when the most i can expect as a compo gpu is nv10 when nv30 is already out.
i think i'll just include a detection and not allow our demos to run on insuficient hw in the future. no matter how many thumbs down we will for it :P. better than people seeing them without textures or with low fps and then think that my code sucks instead of their hw. with "de profundis" the requirements are still extremly low, imho. p3-450, gef2mx.
anyway, that's my few words about the code of this demo.

Shiva : hi! i own athlon 550 + ati rage 128 32mb + 384 Mb ram, i dont think it is so old HW ! to buy a GeF3 i need to change all my computer (cpu, mb, memory ...), so perhaps next year... and i will re-run it to see it at it's full speed ,']
we dont want flamepost like for shad2 when this overHW prod was released. :)
Hmmm... In full screen it flashed very rapidly setting me in a trance (like strobe lights), which caused me to set fire to my house, which in turn burned down the city, and created a disturbation in the atmosphere making a flux of air creating a hurricane which eventually killed 1 million americans, who thinking it was some type of secret weapon developed by a Russian-Chinese alliance launched a bunch of nukes, creating a nuclear war, followed by a nuclear winter, annhilating 97.842% of the worlds' population making a huge economic depression which set humans back into the stone age, and finally making them extinct.

Now Seriously...
I then watched it in windowed mode, and *gasp* it was so beautiful.

Hm... (author tries not to mention a certain demo... :)

Yes, it's understandible why most people compare it to You-Know-What, after all, what most people see is the big-friggin-scene-with-cameraruns...

However, what makes the difference is the meaning.
The-certain-other-demo had very few things to tell. (Well, maybe if you reflect on the man-against-machine-supremacy thingy, but still...)
This one tries to express the poem visually. At this point I must say that most people can't appreciate this demo mainly because they haven't read the poem. Should have done a scroling version of it :)

(sudden ending approaches)
I like it.

someone in kolor's got a fast machine. I can't blame kolor for coding for new hardware, since for personal reasons and for party display that may be the sensible way to go, but it ruins the production for a lot of people.

I just read shiva's post... alright, I'm fine with it. I like the fact that some people code their demos for the latest hardware, and that some don't. If I had better hardware, you'd be my hero.. that's just how it goes :)

Athmosphere rules. Good captured atmosphere even more.

Sadly, that was it. As for the poem, i can find only the first verse in the demo (which describes the athmosphere), the whole meaning of the other verses is lost. But i wouldn't know either how to make a demo which would fit the rest of the poem, so i'm not complaining.

Still, also I find this production very similar to kasparov. Technically, Kasparov wins (don't tell me anything about poly amounts, this engine here doesn't do AYNTHING than display some geometry, no single effect here), and for the "meaning", De Profundis wins. But noize, please stop your narrow-mindedness, see that your holy grail is in fact only a very beautiful grail (but NOT holy) and start to respect others' work, even if you don't understand it :)

Anyway, this demo will stay on my HD for sure.

Why everybody's talking about Kasparov while the only common thing is they both are 3d demos. I rather had Pulse: Sunflower in mind when watching this babe (first time after seeing it on big screen at Dialogos).

I'm normally not a big fan of 3d flyby demos but this one appeals still for several reasons. Raytrayzas music & typography are just excellent. They fit well together with the rest and gives extra kick to the demo.

The fact that there is actually some meaning and connection between the scenes and constant flow from the start to beginning is another good thing. And of course the modelling is well done - sunflower and bird with tree scenes being my favourites.

Keep up the good work! But next time do also something else than mere 3d, please. :)

well, it did remind kasparov as its also somewhat of lonely scene.. but otherwise not much. great modelling and there is an atmosphere indeed. cheap "old-cinema" filter could be left out tho, its just seen too many times before and actually doesnt look like its supposed anyway!

rulez added on the 2002-12-09 19:48:19 by raver raver
i second raver's comment, the old-movie-filter doesn't work as intended. why does the border move, but the content stays still? there are a few more details that spoil the fun a bit... why doesn't anything move except the birds? the tune doesn't really fit the scene... quite dark, but not dark enough to turn the scene into a creepy place.

on the upside, there's really good models, textures and animations.

Somewhat boring. No, actually it is not boring, if you do no think about this as a typical demo. And about the comparison with Kasparov... well, Kasparov may be technically more impressive (I am not saying better), but designwise both demos are actually very good, and contentwise De Profundis clearly wins.
I did not know the poem before I watched this, but this demo really made me think about WW when I saw it! I really liked those flying birds which reminded me of Pink Floyd - The Wall, because there is a similar looking black bird - which stands for Germany in WW2 by the way - that also looks like a fighter.
Unfortunately the demo lacked certain aspects or objects that could have made it more effective, like bad weather ("schwarzer Regen"), more burned out and dead things and a better old-movie-noise.
But the details showed that this was well thought up, e.g. showing the raven briefly in the first scene.
All in all, this is good, as it is!

Kolor rule, I suppose Kewlers took from there the inspiration for their demo called A Significant Deformation Near The Cranium.

A meaningful theme, very moody scenes and some beautiful artwork. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Not everything has to be flash and lightning, not everything should be. De profundis made me think of Oscar Wilde but I don't know if the poem's got any connection to his work...

Yeah, usually this kind of plain 3D-modeling-in-your-face is not my thing, but somehow the soundtrack and the filter give it a bit of a soul.

Ugly vintage film effect, pointless camera spins, but nice music. Overall not all that exiting.
