A nice demo with a kind of scenario, that's good ! A bit short, but cool effects for a soft/dos demo !

Crappy looking 3d world.

The demo is far away from showing what's possible under DOS.

Bouga: Come to Mekka and you'll see some *real* cool effects in DOS demos ;)

It's my first demo using 16m colors, and I am alone to draw the 3d objects (not difficult to create with 3ds), I just use (a little) my last 2d/3d engine. It's difficult to adapt a scenari to a demo... (at the beginning the scenari was in "Les Thanatonautes" of Bernard Werber) I am working on a "not-scenaried" demo.

I've DL it twice ( @work, and @home ), and phew 11mb ( yeah it's bigger than pain :) ) of unpacked ugly textures and .asc for something that don't even run under w2k ... well skarab do you know you can use DX just to get the very basic stuffs ( resolution change, page flipping... ) and do all what you want by hand and it would run on EVERY modern PC and not only on 7years old ones :(

I really hope your thread about SW and DOS wasn't just a buzz for this prod

oooer, now *that's* a promising screenshot! /me leeches like crazy! (and I might even still be able to watch it on my g/f's p133mmx.. 8))

Won't run under W2K here. Sucks.

Sorry, from a modern DOS demo, i expect,

- either fallback to dithered mode13/nosound if a protected environment is detected

- or at least a nice error message telling me to use DOS

... but not this ignorance of the past seven years of OS development. Thanks.

Have you read the text on the top : MS-DOS demo -> doesn't run under Win2000 (no need of message kb), and the file size is only 3Mb (not 11Mb poi², all is zipped, I don't think it'ld be shorter if it's packed..). And poi², yes I know that-> I have a big problem to install Visual Studio 6 : my cd-rom drive doesn't read the file list, only the size of the cd install, I want to know how I can install VS6 !!!!!!

skarab: some DOS stuffs work under W2K ( 13h stuffs at least ), you hadn't yet posted your comment when I've DL Death's World so I expected it would work on W2K

the total size of the unzipped files is 11,904,265 bytes big of unpacked .bmp and .asc

get another copy of ( or buy ^__^ ) VS6, VS5 fits in 1 CD and is enough

Skarab: If you get another copy of vs6 in bin or iso format ....use programs like WinIso to extract the file so you can install it directly from your HD instead of burning those files on CD and then install it from CD.

I will download and check it in pure DOS now. Hmm..

Unpacked counts for me too (But it's good that packed is not big and good to download) since I have unpacked all my demos in HD. 11MB is too big, but ok,. I put a BMP on my Atsou too since I don't know yet how to load any other kind of image. Ok,. it's a matter of hardcore scene taste or something ;)

I will check it now.. I hope to see another nice DOS demo..

Well, from a DOS demo I expect mainly that it's running under ...DOS! So it's nice when it's even running under Win2k, but DOS demos are usually not designed for use with Windows (or only a Windows with a real DOS background like 95/98/ME)
added on the 2002-03-13 20:46:53 by Crest Crest
OK, nice job Skarab. If you want a tune for your next demo...

poi² : mode 13h is the 320*200 256c graphic mode, me I use 320*200 16M -> it's very different ! and why do you speak of the unzipped size ? do you have a 250Mo hard disk ?
Crest : It's a real DOS demo ! (doesn't work with Win2K, but works under Win9x)
Optimus: I know how to use different pictures type, but I don't think it's the main problem : the 3d objects are asc files, that's big, I'll use 3ds files in the next demo. (and in a good demo, I think it's the music who takes lot of mo, when MP3 is using)

And, thank you all! You haven't post a comment like "fuck/sucks", I enjoy that, I'll try to make a good demo !

I know, I ran it under real DOS. This was more a comment to people which think that a DOS demo must nowadays able to run with Win2k
added on the 2002-03-15 02:37:12 by Crest Crest
crest: "DOS demo" and "nowadays" are two incompatible worlds and can't really be used in the same sentence ...
People, get serious, dos ?! give me a break, learn to program for any real os for crist's sake. If you really want to stick to software rendering just use DirectDraw ! it is ridiculus to expect anyone to reboot to dos (if he is even able to) just to watch your prod. Get a grip.

I just tell, if you have win9x/DOS, it'ld work, you'll needn't to reboot, if you have another OS or if you can't running it, go to sleep.

...That's strange.. Bouga, who added the 1st comment for this demo, created his account on the 2002.03.12 ... this demo was added on the 2002.03.12... Moreover, Bouga only added this comment...
humm, I've got an idea about this "Bouga", and you ??
Anyway, you can fuck off Bouga: there is no link to www.Bouga.com

It's our business if we want to code in Dos. If you don't like it then don't watch it :)

Should the scene be split? No? A silly idea??? Ok,. ideally. But if some people want to code DOS, someone argues because he can't watch it in there,. but nobody argues if a demo want run in C64 for example, because PC and C64 is a diferrent scene. Should Dos and Win be diferrent scenes and just do for each other some work?! Ok,. I am talking silly perhaps, but DOS should be thought as a diferrent scene (for the ones who can still reboot in DOS ;) than today PC scene if there are problems with that..
added on the 2002-03-15 23:32:28 by Optimus Optimus
Optimus: Good thoughts. It's silly that some people always try to claim DOS as a dead OS or platform for making demos. I really like it that at least *some* people still try to do stuff for good old DOS. Same for C64 even when I never had one.
