Sadly this doesn't really work on NVIDIA... it runs fine, actually better than on AMD, but half of the camera paths are wrong. This was discovered just before final deadline, no chance to fix right now but i'll look into it later.

banger! burned out to quickly though, the really really awesome musics loses momentum when you hear that bass the 10th time. Damn good sequel still =)

You know you have a strong synth when you can afford having the screen black for ten seconds at a time. :-)

I happen to like the blackouts, and the rendering quality is gorgeous. So is the direction. However… it is a bit long for something that doesn't really go anywhere—I was expecting something with all that buildup. But generally massive!

looks and sounds fantastic. the black screens are a bit too long for my taste (maybe i can't handle the tension) but that does not affect the thumbs ups.

What Sesse said, but I think the direction is balanced. =)

Amazing intro! The animations are beautiful and the visuals are just stunning, but it got rather repetitive after the first minute. Don't be affraid to make shorter demos!
rulez added on the 2018-08-04 19:26:26 by slerpy slerpy
Gorgeous, and with a tasty soundtrack to boot! But, what slerpy said - I'd rather see a short demo that packs a punch than a long one that stretches limited content out to pad time.

Not the first time you gave me these Kubricky shivers. Perhaps in a repetitive way, but I loved this.

The cinematic black is really fitting, but it does have the downside of leaving the viewer waiting for something big that wasn't there.

The default prod score should be undefined so I wouldn't always forget the thumb.

it rather bores me though it’s technically for sure a brilliant thang.

doesnt live up to the first seconds of build up but still pretty darn good visuals and sound

The Shepard-tone of 4K intros. Gotta give props for the presentation quality but I do feel it should've thrown us a bone.

Good, but it's getting a little too familiar, and the blackouts were overdone.

Aesthetically sound although a bit narrow in concept. You have obviously established a style, nothing wrong with this.. look forward to more ambitious productions in the future!

Really really great - and awesome music+soundscape yet again. However it is too longwinded for my likings.
Still, this is an awesome 4k intro!

Imo you really overuse the blackouts. It gets out of rhythm. Still it's audiovisually impressive as expected.
rulez added on the 2018-08-05 00:24:56 by neoman neoman
Damn. I wish i could have heared that on a big PA.
Soundscape in combination with the visuals is quite insane.
rulez added on the 2018-08-05 02:44:24 by gopher gopher
The opening was aiming for something big.

But then it ran out of inspiration real fast. The 1st black screen was cool, the 2nd one was repetitive, the 3rd one was getting old, the 4th one was just plain annoying. Meanwhile nothing was happening at all with that sphere. By the end of the intro I was actually relieved it was over.

The opening scene saves it from a thumb down.

a bit disagreeing with the general comments about black parts. i thought they were a nice touch overall in the production. direction and the sound work were best in this production.

visuals were a bit lacking the "in your face" attitude that absolute territory had but nevertheless the prod as a whole was one of the best 4Ks this year. :)

Familiar Territory

...is how it should've been named considering the content recycling. I felt... I guess a little cheated? And also thought the blackouts had somewhat overstayed their welcome by the end: whereas in AT they were rightly used in the prologue to build up anticipation for the main act, the anticipation curve was rather flat here with nothing really progressing much. As a result it felt less like an on-point narrative method and more like a trick to break up the monotony of overly similar scenes when it became obvious that nothing else was coming.

But technically it's flawless and is a yet another step forward, which makes the discrepancy with content all the more frustrating, so hopefully next time you have enough opportunity to put this marvelous tech to use to the best of your abilities. o/

That being said! I fully expected it to win the first place. It was kind of a shock actually. :o

The soundtrack and bold direction are obviously what makes this, nice way to stretch out content ;) I bet this sounded brutal on the party PA.

Shiny and awesome instruments I’m 99,99% sure I never will be able to create for myself even if I practice everyday for the rest of my life. Was hoping for the rhythm to set in after half a minute. Staying just ambient/athmospheric till the end turns the whole thing rather lengthy

Staring at the same sphere again and again after seconds of black screen. A little too repetitive for my taste. Music is good.

My favorite of the compo, by a large margin!
rulez added on the 2018-08-06 00:00:51 by alkama alkama
The rendering is really nice and the music is really nice... but somewhere around half-way through it did start to feel a bit stretched and since it was fairly obvious that it was going to conclude the marathon of small intros, it was bit of a let down not to have a strong "hook" at the end after the repetitive blackouts, especially as the beginning was really cool... still was kinda "wtf" when it only came second, but then again the fun part of Assembly is that you never know about the crowd.

Wonderful as usual, and inspiring also. The use of the word "final" in the title suggests that this is the end in this line of realtime gfx research, however I have enjoyed every single entry in this series and evolution. The acute sense of purpose and direction lead to a brilliant cohesion of finesse in 4k that I include amongst the highest of all 4k entries in recent times. I can't overstate how much I look forward to future contributions from you!

To be honest I agree with HellMood, slerpy and others with related feedback. It starts really well, and I love the blackout/bass the first couple of times, but then after that it just feels a bit like a chore with no real payoff - I don't really feel like I got anything out of watching the last minute or so.

+1 for a really nice start though, and as always I look forward to seeing what you come up with next :)

The black parts and the glitchness work really well for me, but overall this left me colder than Absolute Territory. It doesn't give the same sort of feeling of an abstract space to me, and hence what's left is the general appreciation for the tech and nothing more.
added on the 2018-08-06 15:52:01 by Preacher Preacher
imho: best prod in 4k intro compo, even if we can hear the same instruments and see "absolute territory" ideas.
rulez added on the 2018-08-06 16:05:38 by keen keen
Not in top from them, but still for sure a thumb in 4k category. Black parts work with the sound but there were tad too many of them.
rulez added on the 2018-08-06 16:28:43 by Serpent Serpent
Full disclosure, there was no real inspiration behind making this. I knew we weren't gonna make a demo this year, but I wanted to make something and submitting a 4k for Assembly felt like the right thing to do for a change. After all I also had the GGX shading and some other tricks worked out earlier which I knew I could use to make something pretty again.

The work on the intro itself was properly started 26.7 with no real idea what to actually make for the content, with all the scenes and camerawork eventually being set up thursday and friday nights before the party. This is also when I noticed I had woefully little space the actual content (less than 300 bytes) after adding the necessary OpenGL calls, rendering code and music. This kinda resulted in a lot of constraints for the content. The black cuts however, were already something I had in mind when I made the soundtrack back in January. They were more an explicit design decision imposed by the music. I was a bit surprised how much a lot of people detested then, but also happy to hear several people tell me they were what made the intro stand out, in a positive way.

All in all I don't feel like making another one of these "flickery" path tracer intros again. I have at least one left in me in a different style but it also requires more work on the technical side before it can be pulled off. Luckily though there's some time until the next parties =)

It's not the end of the "research", but it's the end of this stylistic brand of 4ks from me, I think. There's some further improvements I could do perhaps, but they're such marginal improvements I don't feel they'd be worth releasing. A good demo after all is mostly about surprise and emotion, and I think these have run out of the former. I think this is a fitting end to these and I'm glad you enjoyed them! =)

I think this should have won hands down even with just the music and a black screen.

Very solid, technically impressive, and ballsy from a direction perspective, just like Absolute Territory. Misfired a little bit for me due to the long and numerous blackouts - during the second to last or last one I started to lose interest and there was no climax to reward the wait.
Given the size constraints and rushedness I am picking nits though - what's there is top quality, and your knack for beauty and perfection shows once again <3

The rendering and audio quality is still mindblowing, but the repetitive blackouts destroyed this for me too. It's getting to the point where it's already comical and becomes a parody of itself. I don't feel like I would watch this again, in contrary to Absolute Territory.

what Sir said! nice tech&synth saves you the oink!
mtronic just came up with a perfect subtitle for this!

<mtronic> happiness is around the blackout

Actually im not even mad about those, I understand its a design decision that came at the time the soundtrack and flow were created and it really works with having an impact (otherwise people wouldnt complain ;).
The trilogy was always a lot about contrast, at least for me, and this delivers it right on the spot. Also such colors, very wow!

What kinda pisses me off is that almost none of the awesome prods (yours included) run fine even in 720p on my 1060. Thats hardly to blame on the coders when the specs of the compo machines cry for high-end prods but I wish good gfx cards wouldnt be as fucking expensive as they are (someone wants to gift me one of those upcoming 2080s? ;)! This forces me to Youtubeland (or learn to accept that ~13fps are totally fine), which is a shame.

have two! I liked the black bits, gave it a different feel kind of like an over the top trailer for a thriller. "this year in cinemas, the sphere to end all spheres!"

I would also like to point out I was making a pun about a different demo

wysiwtf: the low exe is targeting GTX 1060 specifically, actually. It should run between 30-60, and really anything less will make this horribly messy. Med is GTX 1080 and High 1080 Ti. Then again still the camera paths are in large part wrong on NVIDIA which is unfortunate. Vega 64 (which was used in the compo) runs the med version fine. Unfortunately the performance is considerably worse on "equivalent" AMD hardware with this one. The sample counts in the tree versions respectively are 24, 50, and 60 which should scale the computation cost linearly.

It sounds like 64k intro! Ingenious!
The visuals are quite boring, though. I suppose the space that was wasted to the floor texture (which nobody noticed) could be spend more efficiently (to store one more object, may be?)
Anyway, the intro is cool!

Obviously this looks great. The opening scene is absolutely stellar.. but after that nothing really happens. The dramatic cuts stop being dramatic when it's just the same sphere, dead center in the screen, over and over. I have no problem with the blackouts, and I don't understand why anyone would, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
