Creative idea, although I feel most people above are impressed mostly because they don't know what's in an 1541 and never heard the floppy drive music programs back in the day :)
rulez added on the 2021-07-04 17:05:51 by Gargaj Gargaj
Nah, we‘re impressed because the 1541 has even less video hardware than a 2600, and it still works :)

Great trick with not doing hsync for a portion of the screen btw, I think you just made the unrecordable(st) demo :)

No, honestly, this is the level of madness I‘d expected from you, squids, and I love it.

(not a selfvote btw, the soundtrack is a cover version, I just consulted a little)

I can feel the suffering that the poor stepper motor must endure while running this, but ... damn! This is so good. Not only for hack value (which is already way off the charts), but the demo itself is also more than decent, and the presentation in the video is just perfect.

So if it's so trivial, why didn't anyone else do it before? Why didn't you, for that matter? Sounds like you're really grasping at straws to seem cool and unimpressed.

rulez added on the 2021-07-06 20:42:59 by dirtie dirtie
Holy shit... First i thought what the hell is this guy doing there (disconnecting power, the c64, cutting cables...) and a few seconds later this blown me away!

I think it uses the bytepatterns on the disk... but... no, that can't be the only thing. I have no idea how and what this basic program does (i dont think it's something like a firmware for the 1541).

Just unbelievable amazing idea, concept and design... This prod must be nominated for the best tech/wilddemo.

rulez added on the 2021-07-06 21:52:47 by Serpent Serpent
Just crazy.
Cutting the cables in the video was a nice touch, although it's of course done way beforehand.
What I'd like to know is how would one debug this... how to even get started when something does not work. Is it just done one small increment at a time?

Not only a totally bat shit crazy idea but also an incredibly well executed demo. My only gripe is the poor audio recording on the video, because let's face, I doubt I'll be running this real time anytime soon.

No (not too many) floppy drives were harmed in making this prod.
rulez added on the 2021-07-07 23:34:13 by CiH CiH
This is some cool stuff!
While the idea and hardware stuff is neat, what impressed me most is the amount and diversity of effects. I did some experimenting with a platform of similar capabilities (1MHz microcontroller where I generated the entire videosignal in software) and let me tell you, it's not easy to come up with effects that works when you have an X-resolution of about 10 pixels or so! :)
I wonder why this only has black and white though, with 2 pins I generated sync/black/grey/white, hardware-wise it seems like the same could have been done here..?

The write-up (link in previous comments) is juicy and the attention to detail is what makes this rise above a "clever hack".

Now that the initial shock has passed, I'd like to comment using more that one word, to point that on top of the technical feat demonstrated here, I really like the originality, the screaming insanity in doing something just as crazy as it is useless and therefore so demoscene, the effort put into doing a write-up, and last but not least, the sense of presentation and the deadpan humour used in the video.

This sure is one prod I will remember a long time.
