Very nice! And kind of refreshing it isn't an Amiga red/white boing ball for once :D
Is it a palette trick? I'm not seeing either of the poles that would show up on the usual lat/long-mapped checkerboard on a rotating sphere. :) I guess the boinging is done with scroll registers.
