Fun little demo, but it has that classic movie trailer problem where the first minute of interesting storytelling has to be followed by a second minute of catchphrases and flashy action (or in this case, even more catchphrases).

Don't mind the return of Evilbot. In fact, I think it's time to make a 10 foot version that can walk around on stage, making him Revision's version of Eddie.

Cool idea & nice comic art ... but the voice recording is really fuzzy & seems to be clipping. A better quality mic & a pop filter would have really helped.
Also sometimes Evil-Bot's chin sometimes clips through his left shoulder in the 3D bit.

Dear Mr. EvilBot

We feel that it is only appropriate that we express our gratitude for the time and attention that you have provided to our Easter party’s last couple of years. It has to be said that our demos and intros have never looked as good as they have on the main screen of E Werk in Saarbruecken. Many of our friends have particularly commentated on the impact that our releases have since winning Revision compos provided us. We would hope that you would be able to provide us with the same service again in 2016.

Regards the dSr team.

I don't like it very much. Even if it got very nice graphics the music is quite boring with dull beats. Also, I can't feel any pacing. Nice idea to do "something else" but I miss demoscene flair with demoscene effects.

re: using Unity

I think we might need to take a step back and reflect on WHY exactly it is sometimes "bad" to use Unity. Because it isn't *always* bad, you know, and the automatic thumb-down reaction purely based on that (sorry Hornet) isn't very well thought-through imho.

1) First of all, in this demo, it wasn't our first choice but something we resorted to due to time constraints.
2) We haven't used any of Unity's prefabs, dynamics, lighting effects or other effects, physics, geometry (well, a cube ..)
3) Basically - in THIS case - Unity has just been a visual editor for compositing / presenting a story with a bunch of artwork and music.

The PROBLEM arises when somebody uses Unity's prefabs or built-in capabilities and passes that off as one's own skillset. This isn't the case here. So in this case, no, using Unity is not "bad" or problematic.

Yours truly,
Mr. Asshole.

Also, if we want to have a discussion about Unity, sure, but perhaps the BBS is a better place for it.

Lacking a BBS-topic: Unity is fine, you just don't get points for rolling your own awesome engine/tool/sequencer/animation-system etc. But then maybe your content is awesome enough that you don't need the tech-points.

It's certainly a grayzone though, ranging from writing your own asm-language to shovelling stock-footage together in an Adobe program. But this being the demoscene, there's room for all of it \o/

I think you might be mistaken, or I'm just too much oldschool. Since I doubt either one is true I'll explain a bit more of why I wrote my last post.

I have no issues with Unity/Werkkzeug or whatever, but I appreciate clearity. Stating what kind of middleware you use is a must. Not just in the beamslide, but one should also incldue it in the demo itself. Give credit were credit is due.

Ofcourse finding out that Unity is used it trival in cases like this. But that point is moot. The fact remains that it is nice to inform your audience beforehand (or afterwards for all I care) that you weren't using your own codebase. What feautures you use and which you don't use bears no relevance.

I honestly think it is a bit unfair towards your competitors and towards your audience as well if you don't.

Did I already mentioned this is a kickass demo with outstanding music, artwork and storytelling?

jco: Thanks for the soundtracks. You do a lot of awesome stuff.

But that doesn't change my opinion or thumbdown.
For me personally that demo is just not demoish and doesn't fit to my personal idea of "the demoscene".
added on the 2016-01-06 00:34:58 by et et
Et: No offense taken :) there's a wide variety of ideas and ideals within the demoscene, and that is a good thing.
added on the 2016-01-06 10:59:06 by jco jco
Numtek: is a demo that opens a window using SDL worse than a demo that does it with plain old win32? Is it okay to use libpng or do you have to implement this stuff yourself? Does an amiga demo utilizing the player playroutine suck? Frameworks and libraries are a common thing in the scene nowadays. Imho reinventing the wheel often doesn't make sense, and it comes down to how much original invention there is in a demoscene prod. In case of this demo: unity or not, from a technical perspective it would have sucked anyway. ;) your point about giving credit to used tools is a valid one though, but then, many demos don't. Personally i don't care all that much as long as the result works - and figuring out how hard something was to create (or what fakery was involved) is part of the fun.
added on the 2016-01-06 11:11:16 by jco jco
Using Unity just reminds me of making demo with the good old Flash, which was also never accepted as "real" platform for demomakers.

In the PC world we've come round in a circle unfortunately, making PC demos was about (ab)using the platform to tease out art&effects. And what's left in many productions (not all!) is making a show which main use is to please the crowd at parties. Using tools which automate this process as much as possible.

Yes there is still a lot of art, love, work and time involved, which is very respectable. But the problem is not Unity - it's that using these tools you don't make demos, you make animations started in a player.
added on the 2016-01-06 13:30:50 by et et
Quote:

Is that not the same as say Conspiracy using their Apex demo tool, or Still using Tool, or... etc. etc. etc.

Anyway, thumb.

lets cut the discussion short: PC suxx unless you code on bare metal avoiding all the tools/libs and OS layers.
added on the 2016-01-06 15:39:18 by wysiwtf wysiwtf
it's ironic how a tool called unity can cause that much discord in our insignificant little scene! ;)
I tend to disagree with the player argument. Unlike flash, plain unity has no timelining features. You can't use it as a demotool as it is, you still have to code a demo framework within unity, and you have to know how the engine works.
I even had to write a bit of shader code in order to get the awesome cube on that bigscreen ;)

Great soundtrack, drawings and I liked the idea to announce party features politician style (you get the opposite of what was promised).
But....
....I start to understand why there is so much hate against Unity/Unreal prods. Compared to the other Demo in the compo, this is very weak in the effects department.
I'm not attempting to stab at this prod and call it soulless etc., just noticed it seems to be a common weakness of all commercial-engine prods I've seen. (Coders don't get scenepoints for writing effects against these engines, it may actually hurt their reputation)
rulez added on the 2016-01-12 17:26:19 by r1g8 r1g8
r1g8: You can do effect fireworks in any engine, but I doubt this was the intention in this case. Take for example the Breakpoint 2006 invitation - it is very similar in style and done in a custom engine. Yet - surprise - it lacks any "demoscene effect". It's a matter of style, not engine.
Also "getting stuff done" might have played big a role here ;)
