Which best solution to see Amiga demos on PC?

category: general [glöplog]

Hi demoscenemates!

Kalikone's speaking (ex-Dylem, Sardonyx, Darkage, Nuance)!

I wanted to have a come back in the scene. I was leaving in 1999 and it's missing a lot since that time.

So, upper, you see my question: what are the best possibilities? (except buying or getting out my Amiga out of the musueum?)

I use Fellow emulator to enjoy old Amiga demos, but it doesn't run AGA stuff (maybe UAE does).
There are also some mpeg/divx videos of Amiga demos available, nice alternative as emulators aren't perfect.
Although these videos are only 25fps so you don't enjoy the full original fluidity (i think :).

yeah UAE now supports AGA but it doesn't work that great
and you need a fairly beefy machine. ex. on my Athlon 900
the sound still doesn't run that well on a lot of stuff.

I know you said 'no buying' but you can find a barebones
a1200 for about US $200 now (cheaper used)- perfect for
running demos. Also there is a commercial emulator
called AmigaXL that is supposed to be a lot faster than
UAE/Fellow (it uses JIT) but I'm not sure if it has the
compatibility to run demos or not.

Usually this has nothing to do with machine speed.

When you patch your WinUAE to default to 100hz video modes (i.e. a multiple of PAL 50hz, which idiot had the idea to default to 70hz?!?!?) the sync will be *a lot* better.

And then of course you can check amidemos.org and download demos in divx format.

And why in earth did you choose that avatar? First I thought we had a new member I didn't know of... :)

I have WinUAE 0.8.18R2 on an Athlon 1.4, and Perfect Circle, Lapsuus, Rise, 9 Fingers, State of The Art, and many others run _flawlessly_ at full speed, in 720x576 full screen resolution. So much better than DivX clips :). You will have to tinker with the settings a bit (e.g. 16 bit color, synch emulation w/ audio off), but once you'll do you'll find that this program rocks. Of course, there are still some demos which won't work on it, but it's improved over the years so it's just a matter of time. BTW, WinUAE does use JIT as well. http://www.codepoet.com/UAE is the place to go.

i hope they'll add pal modes to winuae like in ccs someday.

winUAE is the more simple emu i experienced to see ECS, OCS and AgA prods.

I use winUAE 0.8.14 + Athlon 550 + 384 Mb ram + SBlive + Ati Rage 128 = Video is from 47 to 50 Fps, sound is good too (buffer=3) !
remember an Amiga classic is for tv show not monitor, so video is 50Hz/15Khz standard = 25 fps x2 like a standard tv
So put your pc monitor to 50Hz or 100Hz vbl

Demos are not 100% emulated because nothing can be better than a real amiga but you can see 80 % of good coded Ecs/AgA demos on it (the so called system friendly prods).

For me it's only PAL (320x256), and it not emulate NTSC (320x240). HighRes 640x256 is not well emulated, but HAM and interlaced runs good if coded system friendly.

You need the emulator and all the kickstarts (1.3, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1) to see the demos. If you know what is real amiga hardware, it will be more easy to configure emulator (Mb of chip / Mb of fast / cpu etc ...)

i dont use hard-drive emulation, i use only floppy disk images .ADZ (or .ADF), if somebody have an help file to use harddisks, pleaseeeee send it to me!-)

If you search about old 1989->1996 intros and demos, take a look to ADZ one website.
I'm webmaster of this website, you can see lots of screenshots taken with winUAE (+300).

and have some fun with Amiga democulture :)
remember Design is born before pc
zone: harddisks under winuae are quite easy. add a new directory where you want the amiga hd to be located on your windows hd. then copy/unpack the demos you want to view into that directory with windows explorer. boot up with a wb3.0/3.1 disk in df0: and you can access & launch the demos. you can also copy the wb disk to the hd from within uae, now you can even boot directly from hd without having to insert the wb.adf each time.

thanx a lot robotriot ! it's runs good with the lastest version of winuae :)
(now i must connect my real amiga to transfer my 1Gb of demos ;]] )

if you cant see them on real hardware, divx would be the most precise reproduction, i dont know how good amiga emulators currently are but if they still cant emulate speccy and c64 good enough, i doubt they can replay amiga stuff... and emus suck anyway =]

Have you ever tried WinUAE? Like I said, at full speed it's far better than lossy 10-times-bigger DivX clips. Don't talk trash about it till you've tried it.

and although ccs64 and vice can't emulate c64 perfactly, i still think they do a really, really good job. emulators rule anyway.

WinUAE works well enough on Win2K that I can watch some demos, tho, again, the hardware is the best way to go.

(Vice is a great c64 emu, and works on both my Win2k boxen and my FreeBSD box. Tho, again, perfection is hardware.)

i didn't try winuae but why should i having a real amiga care about it? i dont have powerful enough PC anyway...

emulators are okay to check something but thats about it. i see no excitement to emulate something on PC, only the specific hardware gives you the right feeling and really, no emulator is perfect (there is no smooth scroll on PC still!)

There are 4 or 5 years i used uae with an overdrive 200 mmx, 64mo matrox, sb32. Demo/games turn "correctly" if you select the right parameters on the emulator.
Now i use winuae (and winfellow when something doesn't work)
Ctrl + Inser + home to reboot ;-)
Question:
I make a virtual hhd, with wb 3.1
How to install mui and get on irc with Amirc. i have a curious error during the installation (i try all mode, expert etc, all 68xxx). A lot of things need theses mui libs !

Emulators rules cause it's really usefull in the demoscene, for people who are just curious how demos look like in old machines, for the ones who can't afford to get the real demo yet. If there weren't emulators out there, I wouldn't have any slight idea of how Amiga or C64 demos really look like, something important for someone interested in the history of the demoscene.

So,. Emuls rules, but this doesn't mean that I find them better than the machine itself. Personally, I will surelly prefer the realthing if I have it and can make it work again :)

There would be a big vacumm I beleive, in Computer science and computer/demo history without the emulators. And they are great programms anyways!

stanz: you might want to give aiab a try (aiab.emuunlim.com). it's got all the stuff you need preinstalled.

zone, I don't have any problems emulating harddisk from a directory on the real harddisk.

(could run)
easy...
buy an amiga
buy a VIVO (Video In Video Out) graphics card for your PC
plug the video out of Amiga into the graphics card

and here you go
100% flawless compatible :)
