pouët.net

admin: delete fake prods!

category: general [glöplog]
pouet.net is going like cde.calodox.org went ..

so sad,
pouet was such a cool place 6 months after it was created.. after that for two years it was really cool.

and now some lamers started to destroy the whole content : racist porn pictures in the bbs, lame html relayouting in nicknames, and now fake prods ...

that's so stupid.

i suggest analogue to close the website for something like 2,3 months, thus saving the time of all ppl glopping too much instead of making demos.

then remake it, add an okayish moderating system (something like : only moderators can add releases), ppl can still add comments and lamers can still post their fake prods on the bbs.

that would be a not so bad issue.

analouge could:
- close the site down
- clear up the db (will take time...)
- fix all known exploits
- add automatic picture resizing (so threads can't get fukked up)
- think about a global moderation function or user rating function
- give the admin control to someone he knows and trusts and someone who has time and motivation for all this. Probably a team of people instead of a single person.

then remake it, add an okayish moderating system (something like : only moderators can add releases)

That's too restrictive. There should just be a <del> button somewhere on the prod sheet. The del suggestion should be forwarded to the admin. He can have a look and decide what to do.

I actually thought once about the following:

Pouet should have a request form, something like "modify [prodnum]'s [category/platform...] to [...]" or "delete [prod/group]".

Several people would have an admin-right, and they would have an access to view and accept/reject the modifications/deletions.

yes, it has gone to fa now. humor is fun,and i dont think the pictures disturbs me, but fake nicks and fake prods are just silly.

people should be approved before creating accounts (yeah thats a hell of aprovements)

OK, what about some system like on Nectarine, where everything uploaded will be reviewed by an admin before put on the site?
Fake nicks adding can be easily killed by sending a confirmation email to the given email address. If anyone tries to add a second nick with the same email, it won't work. OK, getting tons of email accounts is possible, but it adds additional effort to the whole process and that maybe could stop these kids from laming around here.
Otherwise i fear that Pouet will go down the drain if this continues. Or people will go away. Or both.
So, i won't use any profane language (although i really'd like to) and just give these few hints.
I know this will cause a bunch of work to be done, but i don't want the only real scene portal to be destroyed by some "funny" lamers...
Over and out
i think analogue is doing quite the right thing.

don't fight the lamers (html nicks, fake prods etc), they'll get bored and walk away or stop their behaviour if you ignore them. if you fight, they'll just have more of their demented fun and enjoy the attention.
the call for moderation / admins is funny. it's quite like in the real world: some terrorists blow up some big building - everybody cries for more police and surveilance without even considering their freedom and the risks involved in any authoritative system.

the "delete suggestion" might still be a good idea though, just to keep the db clean.

I like the email idea... we could use it to spam assholes adding bullshit :)

how do you think this approved stuff? get 2 well known sceners who will refer for you? bah...
no, we need some kind of moderation, nothing else.
and people who know how to play, without destroying the playfield...

gargaj, ok, let's merge our ideas. :)

Instead of a <del> button, a <modify> one. If you click there, a modification/del request form pops up. If you want to delete something you'll need to give a reason though (like, 'it's a commercial game and is just spam').

In the admin view, there should be 2 sortable lists of all those requests. 1 list only for del-requests (click on one to see the reasons) and one for modification requests (corrected party/release date etc). In any case the admin only needs to say 'yes' or 'no' in order to apply the change to the db (similar to the rules/sucks for logos), so he should not have much work. :)

Foolman: its pretty easy to see if a submisison is serious or a fake...

maybe known groupname?
past productions?
a real-name?

Well, i admit that it was NO GOOD sollution, but i think its should have minimize the risk.

well I don't think analogue is doing anything.. I think he hardly has a look at his site..??

woohoo, there's a real discussion with real arguments going on =) and i'm glad to see i'm not the only person who thinks that pouet should be cleaned up a little (and ONLY a little!).

@shiva: your terrorism comparison is pretty ridiculous. increasing police strength and authority is dangerous (possible abuse, total surveillance). what is the danger in having a delete button for the admin? he can do anything he wants to anyway.

btw, who is this site's admin? just analogue or some other mandarine guys too?

Except from the lamers, the moderation feature is very vital in order to correct some scener mistakes, like double additions, wrong informations, dead downloading links, etc. I am just downloading Shock! demos and wondering why many of them are included as Amiga AGA demos instead of PC..

P.S. What means small when talking about people?!

I really wish that some nice people who love pouet to hell and do have a lot of time, would take the permission of administrating. As for me, I really miss the second one or can't catch up what I promise anyways..

The glops? Why aren't they updated??? What's the function for that? Does Analogue has to click an "update glops" button or something so that they go on??? Weird..

Although I have a little sympathy with the pre-teen idiots here (puberty can be a very disorienting time) I do think a good clean up is overdue.

It would probably also help if people could be banned by IP/range. I wont name any names, but I've only been here a few weeks and already know the attention seeking idiots from the few genuine sceners.

Its sad, almost pathetic, that the only reason they seem to post here is to get a hate_count_on_worldcharts ++. The quicker people see this and ignore the idiots, the quicker they may get bored and go back to masturbating or doing something equally productive.

Yeah, maybe some manual interaction of admins wouldn't hurt. I totally second the del/modify request idea, and also new users should be put "on hold" until an admin (who's of course been notified) decides to unlock or reject a new account. If there are more than five admins (I think there are many people around here who can be trusted), this all should be a matter of 1 day delay max.

Admins should be restricted to performing the following functions:

- confirm/reject new users
- delete prods
- delete groups w/o prods / cosolidate group dupes
- modify prods
- lock user accounts
- delete images in posts
- lock bbs threads

I'm strictly against deleting posts or complete threads. Censorship sucks. But I think deletion of gaypr0n images is ok :)

IMO, deletions shouldn't really delete things, but rather disable them. That way, even admins won't be able to perform anything destructive. The little stress on HD space and DB performance shouldn't hurt.

Maybe you could also link the admin status to the number of glöps or activity or something to make the thing mor dynamic. Who knows :)

I second kb's suggestions in several points...

And as the topic is almost the same as we had it a while back as well...I'd also like to repeat that I'd _definitely_ like to see a way to re-edit a prod for the user who added it once...

Like if you made a typo or a mistake in the URL or the info or the screenshot or whatever....
The user who adds a new prod should (at least) be able to re-edit it as well again...

A second thought for this would of course be to enable the 're-editing' to all members of this sepcific group of this prod...

e.g. anyone adds a prod of fR but is no fR member at all...and he makes a mistake and doesn't recognize it or doesn't care anymore...anyone from the real fR who might see this mistake should be able to re-edit this prod to fix the problem then...

As of the last db crash there are several prod-infos lost it seems...(e.g. the category and party info of this one is lost since that time!! :-(
I once wrte an email to analouge to supply him with the correct info to add it again...but nothing happened till today...

Would have re-edited the prod myself of course but can't as of the given reasons...

I could name several LOTS of other prods where any incorrect data is taken in...and never changed/fixed therefore...

This _really_ should change finally to raise pouet.net prod-quality level as well again...

Just mys opinion (hopefully _not_ just mine alone! ;-) )

oh wow.. if these whole art thingie is in the end upgrading the site then..: cool! Nothing can ever stop pouet...! :)

The funny thing is, that an experienced php coder could programm all the suggested stuff within some hours, but there is no chance that anything is gettin' done until analouge finally gives the project to trusted people.

Until now, he didn't. After all a lot of work went into the site, so I can understand that he won't give this (brain)child away that easily...
