what about coolest effects demo (still c64)

category: general [glöplog]

Ok for design.. what about the best effects in a demo?
I don't think I like those designs demos.. most of them are really boring

Seems to me you're pretty clueless. Design does not exclude effects - even not the other way around. You're probably aiming at 'conceptual' stuff, still this does not neccesarily exclude any of the other features mentioned above.

Instead you could ask 'what is your favorite demo' - and why.

... nor clueless. .the point is almost all the "designs" demos so far lacked interesting effects.

i don't know that much about c64 technical details, but you know the routine by camelot is quite convincing

A lot of design demos nowadays use pretty advanced effects to get a specific design.
It's not a stand-alone effect anymore but more in duty of the screendesign.
That's why some people don't dig the new design demos.

How would you define a good effect? Something technically fantastic, or something that looks good?

Well, as a coder, I basically call it a good effect if it makes me go "how the hell did they get a C64* to do THAT?!"

(you can freely swap C64 for any other "retro" platform)

Yep, if something is a mess of blocky dithered interlace pixels I can't make out and is supposed to be the impossible 2d billinear filltered and light sourced bump mapping with color quantization and whatever the coder says, but I can only see the same mess of blocks or runs slow as hell to be enjoyful and nice too then I don't get it. Of course, not every blocky dithereed effect is bad, I have seen some demos that manage to do it look good and be smooth enough too!

Whatever, I love pixel effects that don't have to use big dithered blocks. And when someone manages to do something that looks like pixel manipulation in a a big area, moving so smoothly and stylish, making me unable to get how is that even possible at a quarter the speed and quality then you have it there..

The look like jelly Bitmap zoom/distortion in Parts/Oxyron is still above all in my heart.

But we are talking about demos here, so.
Yes, still Parts (the Sphere Mapping is still amazing, pixel effects rules!)
Oneder/Oxyron (great per pixel gouraud shading, 243 3d dots, wolfenstein (blocky but good))
Dawnfall/Oxyron
Latest Resource demos.
Altered States 50% by Taboo
And the late Camelot demos too.
And many more..

"how the hell did they get a C64* to do THAT?!"

I second that.
