best soundtrack 2007 scene.org award discussion

category: general [glöplog]
I voted for 828. I know most of you disagrees with my choice, but it's the soundtrack that I best remember from a demo this year (that and Timbalame's soundtrack. The demo would suck without it, and it sucks without the demo (for most of you anyway). The demo has one of the best music/visuals relation that I remember watching.

Even if it's not the soundtrack's fault. It's the director's fault.

Debris. has a bad soundtrack. No ofence. It's good and all but it doesn't do it for me. It works has a whole but I don't think it's that memorable.

Lot of stupid arguments will end this thread.. However ,I'm also with 828 I think, at the moment.. the technical best is lifeforce i suppose, but guitars dont do it for me.

What's "technically best" is just bullshit anyway.
For one, there's really no way of judging a track on objective criteria, and secondly it's pretty hard to compare the technical execution of a rock track against an electronic piece.
One could also argue that for some genres, having a mixdown done "by the book" would be wrong in the first place.

I second Mad on his prediction for the replies in this thread.

Since Im also musician i talked to several (around 8-10) musicians about exactly this matter and they all stated that you can compare music technically even if you have a different taste than the other(even rock vs dubstep).. I have no opinion in that matter I only think that this particular track took a lot of effort of a talented(you also cant say that?) musician. perhaps somehow to say "IQ" is a technically variable describing good behaviour in solving complex problems. sry stupid arguments. but however, this thread has got some other destination (I hope).

talking to another musician at the moment.. he also is at your opinion ;) such discussions.. you can do these arguments till death. For me you are somehow right.. eod?

That is assuming that you have knowledge of what the common conception (and here we already are way into subjective-land) of what makes a track technically good for all thinkable genres.

As with other artforms, I don't believe you can objectively evaluate the quality of a music piece. You can say whether you like or not, and why, but it's still nothing but your subjective opinion of the track.

..you are of course welcome to disagree, but bear in mind that I am right and you would as a consequence of that be wrong ;)

What would come in mind before voting about music:
- does it work as a soundtrack, meaning it must be a part of the demo as well, enhancing visuals...
- does it stand as an original piece of music...
- does it features a research on the sound design (akai samples KTHXBYE)
- quality production? meaning the mixing must sound somehow clear and the final punch of the track is here.
- quality of composition, NO I WILL NOT REPEAT THIS PATTERN DURING HOURS kthxbye.

Any of these points could definitly interact between each others but here is my way to judge music in general, if I have to judge it of course as I'm not always judging...

The simple: I like it / I don't like it argument can't work when judging. think about the kitten.
- do YOU think it works as a soundtrack?
- is originality a necessity for a soundtrack, or for music to be enjoyable at all?
- do you have to design your own sounds to make a good soundtrack?
- what is the definition of a good mixdown?
- is monotony a disqualifying factor when considering the quality of composition?

...and so forth.

Mad's right though, this argument can be done to death :)

- yes, it's also all about yourself... but you have sometimes to forget about the fact your face style is doskpop :)
- originality is the little plus that make your nick stand for something but no, it's not necessar, it acts as a plus.
- no, but it's again a PLUS... it gives your track a kind of fresher sound, on top of that, i'm really sorry to say so but... isn't demoscene also about technics and skills? I do think it should also stand to musicians, I agree some prefer using real instruments samples but still, designing the sound isn't only about the sound, its the whole process sounds to instruments to dsp chains to master.
- a good mixdown the contrary of a bad mixdown.
- wtf dood, when said "monotony" you admit the genre of the track is about monotony... I said "repetitive", when the feeling felt by the audience is "god damn it, this is getting me bored"

I agree, we could discuss about it till death.
Evoid Droid is a clear winner for me.

Debris and Lifeforce follow close behind.

Lifeforce was probably the best overall in terms of "sound direction" though as it relates to the visuals and has perfect timing etc.
Evoid Droid is a killer indeed.

I also totally dig Interphace's soundtrack in Noumenon - Yes, I know you read me, I love the style of that tune ! ;)

Lifeforce to me sounds a lot like Iconoclast. I think that visuals/demo would work with a lot different soundtrack, and 828 would only work with that.

as i said, stupid arguments.
