Capped - Flash Video for Demos

category: general [glöplog]
shiva - the seek issue should only really happen with older files, I'll get that fixed though [I can have the info loader get the file length off the site, seek is broken on some VP6 files with the older player].

Also, I was fairly sure when you initate fullscreen though the FLV player object, it automaticly does hardware scaling on the video, then draws the UI over it [so the UI doesn't get scaled]. I'll check up on that again though, and fix if nessary.

And Gb, I'm uploading the fixed capture right now.

there is no such thing as scaling video in hw and drawing unscaled ui on top of it in fp9. trust me :)

I'll take your word for it then shiva.

Gb - *finally* actually replaced your video. Should work fine now.

Anything else? :)

The server threw me a "division by zero" error when submitting this today, so I redid the submit. But lo and behold, I got double submits.

There is absolutely zero info how to report an error on the capped site, so I hope this place will do?

Please erase the second submit: http://capped.tv/playeralt.php?vid=1210443464-1-0

I guess when filesize == 0 you get that error. And sure, this will do, there's also a "report" link on the bottom of vids. I'll go ahead and delete the broken dupe for you.

Alrighty, it's been long enough since the last update.

New:
- Search!
- Wii and older flash versions can now play videos, although at a much lower quality.

Notes:

Search: Doesn't support booleans [in fact, it strips them out], but does support quotes for exact-matches. If it acts odd, please report as I made up my own ranking and filtering algorithm and have no idea how well it will work for people.

Wii Update: Note the wii starts to drop the beginning of videos due to it's limited RAM, so you can't really seek. Also since it's ridiculously slow at decoding large frames, I had to scale back the vids to 400x300. Note not all of the videos have been re-encoded yet.

Also, to those uploading MP4s, please use two-pass encoding, and where applicable, use lower bitrates. Thanks!

there's a down arrow next to the volume meter on capped.
added on the 2008-05-19 19:48:34 by Gargaj Gargaj
I guess I should change that arrow to "DOWNLOAD THIS VIDEO BY CLICKING HERE", though that would take up more than half the control bar...

Also forgot to mention that my "You need flash version blah blah blah" notice actually works on flash player 6 and 7 now.

micksam7: Nice work on the site, but I have to say that it is really slow for many europeans. I know you have said it is hosted at a fast pipe, but there has to be some kind of peering issues somewhere, because over here it is loading videos really slowly.

I know gloom, the datacenter it's in is on the West coast of the US. I've been wanting to move it to Washington DC where it would be only 3 hops to Europe and shave at least 100 ms off that, but no luck convincing the other people I share the server with yet. :P

micksam7: Is your site set up for mirroring? Like; grabbing the data from the server closest to the user? If so, I'm sure we can find some mirrors in europe for the FLV-files.

No, but with a little work it can be.

How much static data and how much transferred per week are we talking about here?
added on the 2008-05-19 22:15:31 by gloom gloom
Currently 8 GBs of videos [60-160 MBs a video low+high quality versions], and this month it's used about 300 GBs bandwidth. Though when linger in shawdows was released, it used 200 GBs a day for about a week due to several gaming sites linking to capped. Just to warn ya.

Small change:

New:
- Video length on front page

And that's about it. There's also this API that I've been working on, for whoever would actually need it, but besides that, nothing new here.

Also I'm seeing if I can get some space on a server on the east coast of the US, to try and help latency times to europe.

wow, does that bandwidth cost you much?

cool project still, man. i use it a lot because my hw sucks.

I've never been able to go over my bandwidth limit [but got awfully close when Linger in Shawdows came out ;D]. Another non-scene project I'm working on is currently helping in funding it.

And thanks for the comments.

micksam7: great service for sure!

may i request a lil addition, the use and display of the platform category like pouet, so that it shows the videos are real-time at their origins and it would be easier to find a demo :)

Just because DTV decided to pimp out their website doesn't mean I'm ditching this project. ;p Better two sites than one. I have plans of my own anyway.. till then, here's some new updates:

New:
- Videos now hosted on a CDN of 31 nodes around the world.

You have no idea how useful it is to know people. ;)

Those who experienced slow download speeds despite having a fast connection, the CDN should help speed things up. For now it's just testing, and I may remove it if people have more problems then it fixes.

Basicly it gets your location and picks the nearest CDN note. Note though, that it picks based on your ISP's dns servers, so if you're using a 3rd-party DNS, things might not go as planned.

Hopefully I can work out a way with the provider to allow people to choose a mirror, but since it's a big company, that might not happen.

Let me know if things speed up or slow down for you.
