3D acceleration kills the demoscene

category: offtopic [glöplog]
3D cards or any other hardware don't kill the demoscene : sceners kill it, or exactly life as they have less time.

Productivity and fast paced life, reduce time to do things by hand, I mean using CPU rendering. So industry introduced GFX card so called hardware rendering. But if it's fast, it's not as accurate as CPU, we win something that speed, we loose something else, that's accuracy.

This is a balance : nothing is given or taken without something else is taken or given.

Well, time is our ennemy but it's also our friend : the accuracy lost will be gain back sometimes later when hardware will be even faster and even or more accurate than CPU.

What is also lost is control : now we play not only with hardware and software but with API and drivers. This is menage a trois or a quatre. Using "black box" like functions already coded is a loss in knowledge but a gain in productivity. It's good for games makers as they can make faster games and in less time than before. It's bad when quality is involved as gestation time is too short. So there is all the time, patchs, final versions, ... Sadly there is too much emphasis today on quantity and not on quality, that's modern life which want that.

Quality exist though and it's rare and expensive (in money or in time often both) by definition.

What is now lost or reduced is imagination : lots of things have already been released and lack of time, reduce idea gestation. Lot of people copy even style and that's what kills the scene. Getting new idea is simple thought : take your dictionnary, open it at a random page, take a word, type it in google, click image, watch, redo the process with 10 different words, sleep. Your brain will mystify and get more and more ideas to implement in code, music, gfx. That's a way to find new ideas, a suggestion. Culture is a way to get new and new ideas, physics also.

Making a demo isn't a car race : take your time, plz make excellent stuff two times per year instead of 30 times per year and whatever API / Hardware / Software you use, everybody will be happy .

I would argue game developement takes more time today than in preceeding years.

But then again, arguing on the interent is like being in the special olympics...
ep: let's put it in straight words to save your time : the scene isn't there to please you, and people don't give a shit about your clueless out-of-the-box advice.

Erm, must be me, but even the simplest 3d accelerators easily beat most software renderers in terms of accuracy/quality.
We have higher resolutions, more stable rasterizing, more advanced texture filtering, antialiasing, etc etc.

kb is 3d accelerated since the degraded year of 1993, that's it?

Scali: my sw-rasterizer has 14 bits of subpixel-precision, quite a lot better than the 4 bit requirements in gl and d3d. but then again, it's about the only feature that i can think of that might beat the gpus without a drastic speed-reduction. so yeah. hardware-renderers are quite a lot more accurate these days. and a lot faster :)

GPGPU computing is the new software rendering.

That's nice, xernobyl.
Go make a 3D accelerated demo about it.

Afterall I really think even in a hell couple of years when I'll die there still will be wieners pumping out sentences like "blabla kills the scene" or "because of blabla the scene is dead" like I heard it for the past years. The good and reassuring thing will be that this means that the demoscene will still be alive and kicking. So...go on...and BTW...the only thing that can kill the demoscene are condoms.

AIDS and STD can also kill the demoscene, so condoms can also save the demoscene.

it took you 3 years to find out ep is a moron?! :)

nice thread. now go make a demo about it. 3d accelerated if possible.
xernobyl, stop bringing the topics from the dead and finish the SCENEPT website...

... and don't forget to come to Inercia Demoparty 2008 (i had to write this :P)

yea yea, the demoscene died ten years ago.

xernobyl needs a ban, just like magic for reopening senseless old threads!
