microsoft is killing the demoscene

category: general [glöplog]
senselessly using the cpu to make the ui more effectful
with effects that everydemoscener knows from the mid-80's?
well, watch the videos

omg!
It's a good thing we have companies like apple that would never dream of wasting cpu or gpu cycles just to add some graphical bells and whistles to the UI...

Haha :D

Iam just confused how they are going to get the best part out of the acceleration with current Windows GDI.. Afaik they are gonna keep backwards compability, and will all these windowes (and therefor same amount of DCs pretymuch) i think it will be a huge problem to get anything exept for notepad and the like *good accelerated*, and if they are gonna do it "both" well... Problems!

Well, it's always a whole bunch of rumors when microsoft are doing anything. I've heard that Longhorn will be 100% Direct3d and it will only use an emulated version for GDI to transform "old" programs to the new system. That sounds reasonable enough because even if they have to make some expensive emulation of the "old" system the kind of computers that are around when this is released will have quite some power instead.

Those videos are misleading. Longhorn is not going to incorperate such dramatic animation. Even if they did, all interfaces will be vector based.
yipiee! I hope there will also be 3D - torusses / ducks / cubes, dot tunnels and (most important) RGB-plasma backgrounds for the windows!

A child is being born.. It has a life... It gets old... It dies...

The demoscene is being born.. It lives.. Its changing.. It gets old. It dies..
I've heard longhorn will have a built in demoscene... :)
It'll organize compos instead of slideshows, and when it gets too drunk partying it won't puke, just BSOD...
But a patch is on the way... :)

haha these videos are fucked up :)))
altho first off i don't really like the whole longhorn concept (this "Trusted Computing"-thing is really something which could cause problems), i don't think these features are really non-accelerated... i think they'll just map the DC's to textures and drew polygons all around (yes, AGP is slow but with 2-3 textures it's ok)... and besides, I'm pretty sure it will be optional to turn these on, not much people want their desktop floating around in pieces :)

i want it... i'll play with it for 2 weeks, then turn it off.

actually it will be a cool nostalgia trip... remember all those funky workbench hacks? I'd imagine the workbench hack scene will be back. And running demos that integrate with the desktop could be fun for a while too.
